URBAN JUNGLE - Anthropomorphic Noir Role-Play

Selected Option:

Urban JungleThe early 20th century of the United States was rife with fantastic change: from the rise of industry giants, to the great experiment of Prohibition, to the tragedy of the Great Depression, onto the dawn of the Atomic Age. The sky was tamed, the world was mapped, and the possibilities of science seemed limitless, all blue skies and buttered toast…

… for some folks, anyway.

A complete game in one volume, URBAN JUNGLE makes you a player in an anthropomorphic world of pulp-adventure, hard-boiled crime, and film noir. You’ll tangle with hardened gangsters, with jaded debutantes, with world-wear wary veterans, and with all kinds of shady characters.

  • Our simple character creation lets you build a character in minutes. With just a few sweeping choices, you'll be playing a hard-boiled wolf detective, a sultry fox femme-fatale, an old anteater drifter with nothing left to lose, a young weasel from the sticks eager to make a name, or any other character you can think of. Our Cardinal game technology gives you everything you need out of the gate, then it's up to you to decide where this track is going to take you.
  • A goals-and-rewards system has your character learning from their mistakes, profiting from their successes, and growing out of the minor leagues and into the big time. Let your character's personality shine through. Stick to the fundamentals, or branch out into new fields.
  • Jump into the deep end and get mixed up in a living world, where opinions can matter more than facts. Be careful, because the people you crossed on your way up will be waiting to take you down. Make friends. Influence people. Get what's yours!
  • Keep your hands clean, or get involved in dirty work. Don't get dizzy as the tables turn, as a friendly conversation might become an unfriendly battle in less time than it took you to read this sentence. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
  • To get you started, we've included several cities full of mystery, and some adventures so you can see what it's like. When you're ready to tell your own story, we've got your back, with lots of advice and step-by-step examples to make it all easy.
  • Fully illlustrated, by such luminaries as Tracy Butler (Lackadaisy), Maritza Campos (College Roommates From Hell), Rick Griffin (Housepets), Adam Koford (Laugh-Out-Loud Cats), Krazy Krow (Spinnerette), and the proverbial more.

Don’t let the long whiskers and the wagging tails fool you. A smile is just another way of baring teeth.

To play this game, you will need pencil, paper, and polyhedral dice.

This game made possible by the support of the Urban Jungle Crowd-Funding Task Force and our supporters at Kickstarter. We do our part.

Don't know if you're still getting these!

I wouldn't want to play medieval fantasy in a gritty noir setting but can you use races from Ironclaw that are not in Urban Jungle?

On page eighteen, in the character creation breakdown, it says:

6) Pick a Career.
Copy your Species trait die into the
appropriate 3 lines. Write in your two Career gifts.

I kiiiinda think you may want to change that to "Copy your CAREER die into the etc etc etc"

Also, page 22 "Selected Given Names of early 20th Century America" seems to actually be a list of surnames.

Personally , iwould love to see the setting expanding on the 40's - 50s - 60s and 70s.
how to play characters who were involved in the WW2 and now are back in the states, Street vigilantes. Also, would love to see an expansion about cities like "Paraiso Soleado" (Las Vegas)

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. It has a very interesting system and seems to be put together really well. My one issue is that there are a few races missing that I would very much like to see being added in a future expansion: camels, llamas, giraffes, raven/crow (although I suppose you could modify Sparrow for this), and parrot.

However, aside from that I really enjoyed the rulebook. I hope to see more expansions for this game.

Wouldn't it be funny if anthropomorphic parrots were mute? "He just keeps squawking nonsense, can't understand a word of it."

Hi there,

What kind of dice do you get in the skills granted by your type, profession and species?

Couple of questions:

When are the three genre supplements mentioned on the Kickstarter page expected to come out?

What sort of changes would be needed to use this for a more modern-day setting like Zootopia?

Hey! I'm planning out a campaign now that is sort of a noir-punk future setting, with found and reverse engineered technology from different decades of the 20th century, so not entirely the provided setting. Really the rules are so incredibly simple and versatile that you can adapt them to anything. Just homebrew your own settings, and challenge rolls can easily be scaled to anything you and your players want to do. Its so easy!
If you want you can even homebrew some more modern types and careers if you want something not already in there. They really made customization a breeze. One of the best rule systems out there.

Is there a technical reason / need to have the pdf and the front / back covers separate? It would certainly look better in my ebook library with the actual cover.

Will this become available as POD? And if so, if I get the PDF now, will the cost count against my eventual purchase of the POD?

(And you got Mama Bliss among the illustrators? Sweet!)

Yes, print versions will be available, in a few weeks. (Around 15-Oct or so.) I won't bore you with the many technical details of print production. XD

It's my understanding that buying an electronic copy does not offer a discount on the print version ... but buying a print version DOES offer a discount on the electronic version. We'll keep you posted!

I do layout/dtp on a bimonthly magazine and send it off to be printed, so boring me with technical details of print production would be entirely redundant. ;-)
I'll hold off until mid-october, then.

Is this the same system as Iron Claw?

Urban Jungle uses the Cardinal Game System, the same core as IRONCLAW. You have Trait dice, like Species and Career, and you roll them to do stuff.

Changes include:
• The new "Type" Trait. Are you Hard-Boiled? Do you have a Heart-of-Gold? Are you so Crooked that you're in this for the money, or are you an Angel that's too good for this world? Your unique Type gives you skills and abilities to easily insert you into a world of noir.
• Character Opinions, as befits a noir intrigue. Who you are isn't as important as who likes you. Keep track of people's Opinions of you, and use them to influence the various powers of early 20th-century cities.
• Repeating firearms, with an emphasis on covering-fire and counter-shooting.
• A revised soak system, where some characters suffer panic, others suffer distress, and still others go into frenzied rage. Don't start trouble if you're not ready to see how it ends.

It's not recommended to mix "medieval fantasy" with "20th-century urban noir", no. Though thanks to our backers' generous support, we will soon have available an occult book available, which you can read about on our Kickstarter site:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
