MASHED: Casualty & Wound Cards

Selected Option:

MASHED is a tabletop roleplaying game that uses Powered by the Apocalypse rules to explore the lives of Korean War medics and affiliated personnel in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH).

This product contains 120 cards including the Casualty Cards deck, the Wound Cards deck, and Instructions card. Use these decks in combination to rapidly generate random patients for your MASH operating room surgeons or battlefield medics. These cards are optional and are not required to play the MASHED RPG.

If you order the PDF-only version, you’ll receive PDFs of all card sheets in ‘print-and-play’ format for your home printer, an Instructions PDF with example of play, and a second 'singles' PDF with one image of each card for use in virtual tabletop programs (such as Roll20).

If you order the 'PDF+Cards' version, you’ll get the PDF files, the physical Casualty deck, and the physical Wound deck.

The Cards

This product includes:

  • 77 Casualty Cards (3 North Korean soldiers, 2 Chinese soldiers, 3 North Korean civilians (man, woman, child), 30 South Korean soldiers, 9 South Korean civilian (3 ea man, woman, child), 11 United Nations soldiers, 19 United States soldiers);
  • 42 Wound Cards (13 bullet wounds, 25 explosive/fragmentation wounds, and 4 wounds of unknown cause);
  • 1 Instructions Card (quick reference);
  • 1 Instructions PDF (with example of play);
  • 1 'Singles' PDF (1 image of each card for use in virtual tabletop programs); and
  • 1 'Print-and-Play' PDF (card sheets designed for home printing).

Note: The decks ship together, banded in a plastic sleeve. Clear plastic deck boxes designed to hold 120 cards are available from DriveThruCards for only $1.00, and are recommended.

Gameplay

To randomly generate MASHED patients, separate the blue-backed Casualty Cards and red-backed Wound Cards into two separate decks. Shuffle each deck. Draw one Casualty Card and place it face up on the table, then draw a number (usually 2+) of Wound Cards. The CO determines both the number of wounds and at least the first ‘hit location’ on the Casualty Card. Place the first Wound Card so that one of its four damage lines links up with the chosen hit location line on the Casualty Card. Do not place any future Wound Card in such a position that would cause it to physically overlap one of the Wound Cards already on the table; instead, rotate the new card and line it up with a different hit location. If you can’t place a Wound Card without overlapping another, put it back into the deck (and reshuffle), and play out the operating room scene from there. Disallowing overlapping cards prevents damage ‘stacking’ in the same wound location and creates further randomization.

Print-and-Play

Whether you order the PDF-only version or the PDF+Cards, you’ll receive PDFs of the card sheets in ‘print-and-play’ format for your home printer. These can be useful if you decide you want extras of certain cards, but don't want to purchase a second printed deck.

To use, print all pages in landscape format, double-sided, on quality card stock, at 100% size (do not select ‘shrink to fit’ or similar when printing), then trim into cards. For best results, print as noted, but single-sided. Next, line up a front and back sheet, and staple them together along the bottom edge. While holding this ‘folder’ open with one hand, use your free hand to cover the inside of each sheet with spray adhesive, then carefully stick them together. Wait for whatever period of time is recommended by the adhesive instructions, then trim the sheets into individual cards.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
