MAGENTA, OPEN SOURCE MILITARY ROLE-PLAYING is designed from the ground up for roleplay in the social context of military culture and the explosive violence of modern war.

The Magenta engine was first used in Sanguine's critically-acclaimed RPG ALBEDO: Platinum Catalyst, and now it sees new life as open-source, Open Gaming Licence content. The document only contains the rules, and has no setting information.

  • Realistic combat rules, without action-movie exuberance. Status-based injury and morale keeps the accounting of combat simple and quick.
  • Chain of command, where players control both one Main Character and a retinue of Supporting Characters, so realistically (and mercilessly) dangerous combat won't knock players out of the game.
  • Morale, as characters succumb not only to wounds, but to the shock and awe of deadly combat. Keep your Supporting Characters alive through multiple missions, and their morale grows along with their loyalty.
  • Firearm statistics are modeled on real-world physics and data, yet gunplay is quick and easy in practice.
  • Support rules include artillery and air support, remote-controlled drones, and targeting by remote camera, so it scales easily in to the near future and far future.
  • Open Source under the Open Gaming License, for use in your own games and publications.

Will there be further updates on this? I like having it be out and OGL, as I liked the idea behind ALBEDO: Platinum Catalyst, but I feel like I don't have a basis for creating certain things. For example, the rules for using shotguns are in there, but I don't know what effects those dice changes will have on combat, so I don't know what to set the ranges and damage on shotguns to. I have hit some similar roadblocks for reconciles rifles or, in game settings without a Genia Convention, flamethrowers or gas weapons. There are also some missing rules for using vehicles.

For a company trying to publish a game using your OGL, these lacks are fine, and where they would add their own flare.
For a GM trying to use it for a custom game, it feels a little lacking.

To reiterate what all my rambling is about, will there be further releases and clarification, or is this the whole of Magenta?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
