Carnival Arcane: The LARP

Circus animal acts draw big city crowds, but carnivals reach more rural Americans in 1928.

This is why the citizens of Warren's Rock were happy to see the Lancaster-Rigby carnival train arrive in their quiet New England coastal town late one autumn evening. Workers raised the tents and booths overnight, and the carnival opened to a waiting crowd the next morning. Most folks forgot their worries for a day and every child received a free bag of jelly beans as families left at closing time.

Nobody noticed the people who lingered at the gate and tried to remain hidden in the shadows. They came from all walks of life, drawn by rumors that the Lancaster-Rigby Carnival was not what it seemed. Some wanted freedom from a punishing life, some wrestled with dark secrets, and some were no stranger to murder. All wanted something they could not find in the world of light and reason.

The moon remained hidden behind a sea of clouds and a distant whistle sounded in the harbor as midnight arrived. The group shifted nervously when nothing happened, cursing the rumors for leading them wrong. Then the lights came up, the gate opened wide, and a barker yelled, "Welcome to the Carnival Arcane!"

*****

On most days, Lancaster-Rigby is much like other carnivals. Its colorful tents and avenues overflow with clowns, side-shows, popcorn, and games of chance. But if Fate beckons, the carnival opens again at midnight, welcoming those who seek help from the Other Side. Of course, spirits don't do anything for free, and not all spirits are good. And some people who want their help can be desperate enough to do anything to get it.....

Figments of Your Imagination presents Carnival Arcane: The LARP, our first product in a series of licensed, supernatural horror-themed live action role playing scenarios inspired by the music of Midnight Syndicate. This scenario allows your players to step into the chilling world of Midnight Syndicate's acclaimed soundtrack, Carnival Arcane.

What makes an FYI LARP so special? Our narrative-style character sheets provide backstories, motives, secrets, goals, and resources. Our multiple plotlines give all players an opportunity to get involved, and our landscape formats are easy to read both onscreen and in print.

This 96-page LARP includes:

  • A plot-driven LARP with no boffer (foam weapon) participatory combat
  • Simple rules that keep the action moving
  • Detailed character sheets
  • Useful player handouts
  • Suggestions for props, decorations, and even menus
  • Extensive notes and comprehensive plot summaries for game masters
  • General LARP advice, such as how to find an event location and attract players

To play this LARP, you need 11-20 players and at least one experienced game master. The event takes approximately four hours to play. Use our quick and easy rules, or adapt the scenario to your favorite system.

NOTE: This adventure does not include the Carnival Arcane music soundtrack. While you don't need it to enjoy this LARP, we recommend playing it in the background during the event to help set the mood.

I got a chance to play this LARP (my first ever) with the writers at GenCon! It was great! I also had the opportunity to run this for a group of friends. Of the 20 guests, only two had roleplaying experience. Despite that fact, the game was a big success. I highly recommend this to any LARPER, even newbies!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
