The Nomad Base Class

The nomad is a wandering warrior from a far off culture (like a barbarian generally is) who is as skilled at ingratiating himself into said culture as he is at slaying his enemies. He has a unique “cultural adaptation” mechanic that is somewhat reminiscent of the ranger’s favored enemy. This draws from a variety of literary and historical sources such as Othello, Lawrence of Arabia (T.E Lawrence), and William Adams (AKA: Anjin Miura).

Mechanically, the class is a Wisdom-based martial character with a suite of unique mechanics that rely on cultural groups. Unlike the ranger’s favored enemy, he can store a large number of them and can even shift them as needed (to a point). He also has the ability to supernaturally ingratiate himself with members of such societies, a bonus on a number of key Charisma-based skills, and some fun class features that give him unique combat options due to his exotic/foreign style of combat.

To celebrate this, we are going to give a copy away to the first three people who post their own personal story about fitting-in in a new culture (either PM us or post here!).

I've pretty much BEEN a nomad most of my 48 years of living. I was a US Air Force brat the first twenty years of my life, on active duty in the Air Force the next six years and moved around the Northeastern United States every few years for the next ten years. It's only been since ten years ago that I've sort-of settled & lived in one place - more out of circumstance than intention - although I'll probably have a lingering case of 'itchy feet' until the day I die ;)

If I started thinking about it, I could probably still pull a lot of 'cultural adaptation' stories out of my swisscheesy memory. One that easily comes to mind after more than thirty years though, was the strange culture-shock of the _very_ laid-back philosophy of 'manana' and 'siesta-time' that permeated the society of Central Spain in the mid-1980's. It was so strong & prevalent a way of life that even the American citizens stationed there through the military tended to lead relaxed, 'hakuna matata' lives after being stationed...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
