Iron Falcon Rules for Classic Fantasy Role-Playing

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The earliest fantasy campaigns grew directly out of wargames. There was a point in the development of the first commercial role-playing game when the rules shed most of their wargame roots and assumed a form familiar to generations of players to come. Iron Falcon aims to be that game, reproducing its mechanics and style in all its raw and innovative glory, as it was before the advent of more "advanced" rules.

Iron Falcon appears to be the genuinely basic version of Basic Fantasy :)

When you really want just one book. Only one book.

Thomas, I can't process a return or replacement for you. You'll need to contact DriveThruRPG directly for that.

Great Product for those wanting to update their original D&D (White Box) materials. The original game started with just the three books and did not even include the cunning Thief class. By the end of the 8 books or 7 depending on how you count, the rules were all over the place. The rules were scattered as they were updated.

Wouldn't it be nice to have it all in one place in an orderly fashion? Why Yes, it would.

And, so you have it. The author has been careful to not alter much and clarify where appropriate.

If you want to see what all the fuss was about in the 1970's ... here it is. The basic game is great (and I cut my teeth on the original box set but ... this is where the Master's played. The 1st edition Ad&D DMG is a treasure beyond words. It was so awesome that it didn't have a version on it because none was needed.

Yet ... the thing that created the hobby was those three small books (and a few add ons). Here is an accessible way to see...See more

I downloaded the free pdf from the website. I only saw, maybe 3 or 4 pieces of art...is there more art in the print version? Thanks.

The PDF on the website is the exact PDF used to create the print, so no, there is no more art in the print version. Iron Falcon is a "bootstrapped" product, which funds its own expansion and embellishment; as of right now, it's not selling enough copies to pay for new art.

That’s a shame.

I have to disagree with Michael J's brief review. This is a fine tribute to original D&D - white box plus the Greyhawk expansion - which I believe (and could be wrong) is the version most players enjoyed at the time. I'd go as far as saying that, Iron Falcon, rather than being much the same as BFRP as Michael J suggests is a totally different game.

Thanks Michael H! It is, in fact, a very different game; I'm not sure where the other fellow was coming from.

The PDF is available for free without any watermark on my site: ironfalconrpg.com

I don't see the "free" option when I look at it, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Sorry for the delay -- life happens. I've downloaded from your website and will look over the rules as soon as time permits. Thank you for your help, Chris G.!

Seems that the PDF-only (free) option is not available. Please add this, or remove the "free" cost. Either way is fine, as long as I know what options I have.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
