Shadows Over Sol: Science Fiction Horror Roleplaying

Selected Option:

Two hundred years from now what should be the shining beacon of the future is instead cloaked in conspiracy and horror. Humankind has expanded throughout the solar system, and there it has discovered mysteries older than humanity.

The culture has shattered into myriad subcultures; nation-states are the hollow shells of what they once were. Corporations and other groups wage small-scale wars in the streets or in space. Bioengineered horrors left over from these conflicts stalk the hulls of ruined stations and abandoned colonies.

But for an enterprising team willing to brave the horrors, there’s always a profit to be made.

Shadows Over Sol is a hard science fiction horror roleplaying game using the Saga Machine system. Its features include:

  • Discover the secrets of the Sol system, with multiple GM options to keep players on their toes.
  • Support for a wide spectrum of play in the science fiction and horror genres.
  • A fully-realized setting with a detailed breakdown of both social dynamics and the solar system, from Mercury to the Oort Cloud.
  • Systems for personal combat, engineering, hacking and more!

Character sheets are available here. Electronic files come in PDF, MOBI and EPUB formats.

Age of Ambition: Fantasy Roleplaying in an Age of Promise or Peril

Age of Ambition is a fantasy roleplaying game where magical and technological advancements are challenging the long-standing social order, and where the heroes help guide the world into a brave new era of promise or peril.

So strap on your breastplate and pick up your pistol. There are discoveries to make, wrongs to right, tyrants to overthrow and new social orders to trial! Features include:

  • A lifepath character creation system, including birth omens, life events and careers that connect each character to the world at large.
  • Support for a wide spectrum of power and influence, from peasant revolutionaries to the leaders of nations.
  • Systems for personal ambitions, influence, social change, bonds, magic, invention, combat, social status and more!

Does this have an alien or creature creator for bio-horrors?

There isn't a creature creator in the core rulebook, I'm sorry to say, but one exists in the Fatal Frontier supplement:https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/173336/Shadows-Over-Sol-Fatal-Frontier

While there are some thematic choices in this game that I am not a fan of (the Jupiter Group Incident being a major one, and in fact that is something I will totally ignore as I want Jupiter colonized) all in all I am not just glad I found this but that I bought a hardcopy of the book. It is a pretty fun read and an enjoyable game.

An awesome survival horror with plenty of real world ties. Check out my full talk on Facebook at Comics, Clerics, & Controllers. https://www.facebook.com/northernmountainnerd/videos/2133838816854260/

On page 32 where you state that slug throwers require atmospheric oxygen to ignite cartridges, is that a deliberate change to the way things work in the "real world" or did someone misunderstand the physics/chemistry of cartridge weapons?

The truth is I wrote the initial draft of the book not realizing that modern ammunition supplies its own oxidizer. This was later pointed out to me and I changed most of the references in the book, but apparently missed that one. So yeah, not a deliberate change to the way things work in the real world. Personally, I would just ignore that reference.

Thanks Thorin, I think the rest of the book is so grounded that it meant that particular section made me really sit up and think, "do they really mean that". Think the section on underwater operations might have a similar comment? Standard firearms are pretty rubbish underwater but that's more to do with the poor ballistic characteristics of standard ammo, and the fact that the gun will probably rust quite quickly, than anything else. Pretty sure could upset someone at very short range, say <1m, underwater with a standard firearm. Anything else needs special ammo. All that would tell you that you'd be fine in a vacuum and mostly worried about recoil in the zero G of a space environment. Thanks for a great book. I just backed the expansion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikZHga9FJ1I

I've seen H&K carbines fire underwater with no ill effects. I've also seen an M-4 blow itself to bits when it was fired underwater. I'm not sure how reliable either of those videos were, but at least the H&K I was looking at had ways to fire that ejected the water so things didn't go sideways. Not sure if that is a separate mod or a design feature on some lines of firearms. So it is quite likely that in the future, firearms will work underwater (by underwater in the context I mean, I mean submerged in a river you are hiding just under the surface of, etc. (at least those work today). And if you've ever seen the first part of the beach assault in Saving Private Ryan, MG and rifle rounds quite often drive a fair few feet under water.

So, firing out of water from just under water: Can do now with the right firearm.
Firing underwater at shallow depth: Can do now, but don't expect more than 12-15' range if that. Water can easily tumble a projectile and they lose velocity fast under water....See more

Didn't buy this through drivethru, so I can't leave a review ... anyway, I just started reading it and was positively surprised. There are a lot of games out there that mix sf and horror, and if you ask me, the horror element often detracts from the sf. Now that I'm through the history and the technology chapters of this one, I can firmly state that Shadows over Sol is different. Elements of mystery and horror are hinted at, but the main attraction really is a very thought through history of humankind and its first steps into space in the next 200 years. The technology described is very believable and grounded in science - you get space elevators, starship with heat sinks, stealth in space is practically impossible as long as you run your engines, and there while in space, everything is done to recycle each list bit, there has been still no truly autonomous life cycle established by humans, so stations and colonies still have to rely to some degree on materials they need to get from earth (while earth increasingly...See more

It appears that DriveThruRPG is having some sort of issue with one of their servers today. I'm going to reupload the PDF to see if that fixes the problem. In the meantime, or if you still have issues, feel free to send me a message through our company contact form http://www.tabcreations.com/contact and I will personally make sure that you get your copy of the game.

There is one scenario included with the core. There is also a free second scenario included in the Quick-Start, and we have two adventure supplements on the way.

So, being that the GM screen is available as POD...how about making this POD as well?

That's our plan! We mention at the bottom of the description: "Print copies will be made available in the coming weeks."

Basically, we need to order and review a printing proof before we make it available POD. The first printing proof we ordered for the core game needed some corrections, so we've made the corrections and ordered a second one for approval. On the other hand, the first printing proof of the GM Screen was OK, which it why it was approved for POD before the core game.

Assuming the second printing proof of the core is OK, expect it to go POD in the next week or two.

Looks like that was some sort of bug. Either way, I think I've fixed it now. Let me know if you still have the issue after refreshing the page in your browser.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
