The Genius Guide to the Talented Bard

Master the Secrets of Lore and Language

Bards are often disparaged as near-useless secondary characters, with jokes about how singing can’t help a party make Stealth checks, and the power of interpretive dance. But at their core, bards are character who know things that let them manipulate the world and everyone in it. Of course most bards get locked into a specific implementation of that idea, with few options to change the way they use their vast knowledge, magic aptitude, and power to warp reality through passionate art. But now with the Genius Guide to the Talented Bard, players and GMs can build exactly the maestros of esoteric arcana they desire. While remaining a likely source of lore and aid for a party, a talented bard can focus on types of performance from magic songs to battle dances to glorious epics to satire, or explore arcane magic, magician’s tricks, thieves’ tricks, and even secrets of the grave.

Gotta definitely agree with the review on 1 key thing, masterpieces aren't worth an edge. They're normally gained in place of a spell known or a character feat. Both of those are worth far less than an edge.

Moreover, I'll add that using an edge for cantrips honestly isn't worth it compared to the other options of edges.
Either the reviewer missed it or the developer changed it, but cantrips is required for the rest of the spellcasting access, so maybe that can be used to justify it. Hard to say to say if that helps or hurts the argument for making cantrips an edge.
The best argument for cantrips being a talent is how the class only gets 2 edges, so taking any of the other edge options require delaying your entire spellcasting progression considerably.

What's definitely not worth an edge is arcane investigation. I looked it over. It's some extra spells to the spells known, sure, but they're from a very niche set. If it could be taken starting at level 1, cantrips were a talent...See more

The bard only gets 2 edges at 1st level. it gets many more edges over 20 levels of progression.

I saw that. The problem is cantrips is an edge and required to get spells, which are also an edge. That means to get normal bard casting, you can't get any other edge options at lv 1.

Since the rate is 2 edges at one plus 1 edge every 3 levels after 1, either the spellcasting progression rate ends up getting delayed at some point or you have to wait until after the progression is complete to get even one of those other edges.

That really hurts a lot of the flexibility and customization. An easy solution would be to just make cantrips a talent instead of an edge.
It might seem a little potent for a talent at a glance, but genuinely, anything cantrip-related that gives less than that isn't even worth a talent.

This is of course all assuming the preview matches the product. I have no idea how the preview system works on this system, though. I'm just assuming it's a few pages of the actual product.

Do Want! I have a Bard in my Pathfinder campaign as an NPC, but I play him as a mouthpiece and comic relief. He's a Storyteller, from the Gamemastery Guide. I need a Bard who can engage in deadly satire. :D Definitely going on my list of PDFs to purchase soon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
