Civilian Starships

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Stars Without NumberTM science fiction role-playing game has a wonderfully simple starship design process based on installing Fittings into a few standard hull types, but the books lack a comprehensive list of basic ship designs for quick use by a GM or players. Given the assumed setting of most SWN games, it isn’t surprising that standard ship designs would not be common. Each world or small interstellar state would most likely have unique designs that meet their unique needs. However, we have found that it is often a lot easier to have some basic designs to start with that can be modified to fit a given situation rather than designing each ship from scratch every time. There are essentially no civilian designs for starships for SWN. This product hopes to help solve this problem.

During the design of these civilian ships, there were several additional Fittings that we felt would have helped us, so below the designs you will find a list of new Fittings, aimed at Civilian ships such as would be used by player characters. This product also details six “standard” ship designs created using the core rulebook and the Skyward Steel supplement, both available from SineNomine Publishing; additionally, there are six ship designs including new Fittings defined in this publication.

Included are:

- Clarified starship operation cost rules.

- 6 civilian starship designs using core-book fittings.

- 6 new starship fittings.

- 6 civilian starships utilizing the new fittings.

Hi. Concierge-class Private Courier is a fighter class hull yet it uses frigate class fittings? Is there a reason I'm not seeing?

Good, other than no water aboard which can be used for drinking, showering, pooping. Remove some fuel and replace with water, water filters, and some of containers for refuse for poop which can be emptied during the trip.

A couple of other thing noticed after looking more closely at the PDF and checking the math on the ships.

Military ships have a use ¾ (75%) of maximum crew (except in certain cases as indicated on SS page 54.) when deterring payroll costs in credits. It looks like fractions are rounded down, but the crew can never be lower than 1 when looking at the sample ships in Skyward Steel.

The Payroll formula in the PDF needs to be fixed to indicate to use ¾ (75%) of maximum crew for military (paramilitary) ships and not maximum crew.

(Note that BP does use Maximum Crew for military ships for BP payroll costs though except for those with extended life support and in certain cases (troop transport and ships in which the crew space is for passengers), see SS pg. 54. Ships with reduced crews indicate what there crew is.)

Skyward Steel sample ships use 5% total ship cost listed for yearly maintenance listed for them, but they actually have higher costs and this is just...See more

Noticed this other stuff I didn't mention before o be aware of if you do do an update:

1.) The Maintenance Cost for a ship in SWN on pg. 70 is incorrectly given as 5% of Base Hull Cost. When it is 5% of the Total Ship Cost.

Might be a good idea to mention this error.

Kevin Crawford got asked about the Operating Costs and indicated that and said the the following text in quotes when asked about a ship's operating cost on a forum awhile back in case you wondering.

"Page 69 in the core book covers payroll and maintenance costs. In brief, it's 100 credits per day per crewman to keep it flying, plus 5% of the ship's total cost per year for spares and maintenance. Note that those prices are for civilian ships, and assume that the captain is using already-extant shipyards and maintenance stations to service his ship.

If you're pricing a ship as part of a planet's navy, operating costs are much higher. Skyward Steel covers the particulars, but essentially,...See more

Your welcome. Really great to see new SWN stuff.

I did some detailed checking on the math of some of the ships last night and made notes on design problems. (Note that other ships in the PDF have design (stat) errors. These are just the ones I looked at last night and tried to fix when a problem existed.

Alberich-Class Mining Ship – The description says it isn’t capable of interstellar travel but the stats do. One fix is to add in the Reduced Fuel Bunker fitting that was in the Infinite Stars Article, that didn’t get reprinted in the PDF, cost will go up slightly, but the extra point of free mass can be used for more cargo space for mined materials. Removing the spike drive is another option this would cut cost in half see the text in the Starship Hull’s section in SWN. The Fittings says 40 person weeks next to the extended stores fitting but this doesn’t make much sense as the ship has a max crew of 10 with the standard being 2 for this ship.

Hawking-Class...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
