Colours of Magic: Black

A Spectrum Shift: Chromatic Arcana Product

Length: 19 pages + licence

In some worlds, Magic may not be seen as a force in and of itself. In some philosophies, magic can not be classed by types of effect, like Evocation, Illusion or Abjuration. Instead, it might be seen as a result of fundamental aspects of arcane metaphysics.

One such theory holds that all magic is a result of the principles of Colour.

You might hear of Black Magic, and think of witches, or destructive powers, or the forces of darkness. Historically, we have a tendancy to quantify black as evil. But imagine a universe where every colour has power, and each can be used by good or evil for their own aims and goals. What then would Black signify? For Black is a colour unlike any other: when you remove the light, it is what is left. Black is the absence of colour.

In such a universe, Black is the Absence of Magic, symbolizing normal matter, and normality itself, representing stability and resistance. Drawn from the Earth, Black Magic has the power of solid material to remain resilient against change and damage. It also holds the ability to oppose supernatural forces and even negate them. It is superlative protective magic, broader in scope than simple abjuration.

Occasionally there are those born with a strong connection to the Earth. This resonance can be developed into a powerful capability to evoke the Black, such that the Earth itself might answer the call of the Mage. Those with this close relationship and the powers it allows receive ultimate expression with the Chthonurge class.

Included in this product:
- 3 new Clerical or Mystical domains
- a linked reclassification of one twelfth of the spells of the players handbook, with some new spell effects to fit the spells into Chromatic Magic Theory
- a whole new character class, the Chthonurge.

The colours of Magic are being updated to 5e if you are interested - Please take look at Brown

I'm going to try to keep from being biased with this review. I absolutely want to play the Black specialist due to its wonderful flavour, and heightened by the nice short story and evocative sketch. The magic of the colour Black is unlike those [...]

This is not your ordinary "black" magic. There are no Necromantic spells, for instance. The spells that belong to the color Black tend to be from the Element of Earth, protection, and anti-magic. The specialist of Black magic, the Cthonurg [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
