High Guard

Watermarked PDF

Welcome to High Guard.

This book is a major expansion to the Traveller roleplaying game, enabling you to design, build and fly spacecraft of all types found throughout the galaxy. You will find rules to modify existing ships, design high performance space superiority flyers, and construct the largest capital ships to travel the space lanes.

High Guard also presents new approaches to handle spacecraft operations, from engaging in vicious boarding actions to spacecraft security, from employing a range of warheads in missiles to accessing technologies seen in science fiction settings beyond the Third Imperium. Your warp drives await.

With more options and more powerful weapons, High Guard returns to space combat and provides a rules framework to use in epic space battles, from spiralling dogfights involving just a handful of lightweight fighters to the clash of heavily armed battleships across a front stretching through an entire star system.

What previous star ship generation system is this most like CT, MT, TNE, or T4? I'm looking for something crunchy and flexible in terms of options (types of power plant, M and J Drive for example) to replace TNE and T4 which both have their problems.

I just got this and was wondering if there was a print-friendly copy like the Core Rulebook??

So the core book says there would be detailed rules on boarding actions in High Guard. There do not appear to be rules. I bought the deployment shuttle and aslan book to find it. still no detailed rules I can see. Where are the boarding rules that core promised in High Guard or did I somehow miss them?

Love the character generation in Traveller so decided to 1. get everything and 2. bought physical book from direct Mongoose. I then read in a forum that I could request a pdf copy (no charge) direct from Matthew Sprange and a few hours later I get an email with the links to download from RPGNow. Yes the pdf's are probably expensive but the service is second to none. Now I just need to return the favour and get this game to the table.

this is mongoose all over, look what they did to Runequest! this edition was unnessesary and is a cash-in. I got the PDF of the main book and see little to no real differance but lots of clored pages and clip art around the same game, Adventures are pretty much usable with the prior editions with a little tweek considering Classic Traveller IS Still available on Drive thruRpg go for that or Mongoose Traveller 1st ed, I have payed Traveller in all its editions over 35 years since Classic and Snapshot and Classic is by far the best :)

So, my question is... If you own the 1st edition, what exactly has changed in the second edition?

Most of the comments below were from last summer. Does anybody know when this High Guard PDF was last updated to address all the issues below and on the High Guard thread on the Mongoose forums? High Guard has now been out for more than 6 months. Have all the issues been fixed?

You can already get the hardcover on their website for about $40. Which makes the PDF purchase at $30 seem outrageous The website is

$30? Is Mongoose trying to sabotage the line?
Customer avatar
Scott N September 04, 2016 5:52 pm UTC
I can get the hardback for $34 why pay for a crap test PDF?
Customer avatar
Bruce M September 04, 2016 6:58 pm UTC
I'd wait to get the hardback as there is still errata in the PDF so you know the hardcopy is still screwed up.
Customer avatar
Rory H September 05, 2016 8:14 am UTC
Because it isn't a crap test PDF. It's an awesome supplement, and I cannot wait for the final hardback.

Price gouging prompts black marketing and piracy. At least my marketing class textbook says so.

The textbook that probably costs $200 used too

Is chapter six missing or were they miss numbered? Space Stations is labeled as Five and The Ship's Computer is labeled as Seven.

$30 for a PDF that seems to be filled with errata. First, I don't know of any PDF that is actually worth that much as that price range is usually reserved for print books. Second, with it being filled with errata it should be much much cheaper.
Customer avatar
Rory H August 22, 2016 4:24 am UTC
The errata isn't deliberate or indeed deliberating to the overall text of the game. Mongoose have simply got a thread running listing errata, with an intent to continually update before the initial print run.
Customer avatar
Rory H August 22, 2016 5:43 am UTC
Ahem - 'debilitating' that should be.
Customer avatar
Bruce M August 23, 2016 1:13 am UTC
$30 for a PDF is a very high if you ask me. There are loads of high quality products on this site that do not sell their PDFs for that much, not even the core rulebook PDFs are that much and this is not even a core book.

But $30 for a PDF that still has errors? That is ridiculous.
Customer avatar
Rory H August 23, 2016 3:31 am UTC
To be sure, I got my PDF for free as I pre-ordered the hardcopy. In terms of what you are prepared to pay, that is really a matter for you. You vote with your pocket, but Mongoose aren't obliged to set a lower price - and they have hit Silver already, so somebody is paying that amount. The corrections will all be updated in time with no extra cost (as Mongoose always does).

I don't really get the criticism, tbh. The content itself is terrific!

When you really like the system and want it very much, YOU WILL PAY even if it costs 30$ or even more. However that doesn't mean that this enormous price is justified. Playing on people's love of Traveller and setting a price high as hell (when even works that took much more effort like Exalted 3rd Ed which was balanced and written for almost 5 years cost less) is just a**hole way to do it. Especially with those "its cost is 50$ but just for you it's price if 30$" that they place on every product.
Customer avatar
Rory H August 24, 2016 3:47 am UTC
Well, clearly YOU DIDN"T PAY for it (while others did), so your criticism is somewhat flawed. Mongoose are a business, who need to make profit. If they don't get their own overhead covered - and lets be clear the step up in graphical presentation for them would not come without a cost - they they'll not be able to keep making them. If you don't want to pay the price of admission, then that is up to you.
Customer avatar
seph D August 24, 2016 7:31 am UTC
Yup I didn't, yet. For now I do not have the money to spend on this, even if I want it very-very much. In business you look on the market. And on the market it's one of the highest prices. Look at prices of their competitors (e.g. Stars Without Number) and you'll see. I'm not saying they should make the book 5$ or something. But this price is just inadequate, and works only because Traveller is a setting + system that people know and like already for years and years. If it was something new, I doubt it would rise even to copper best seller.

Well, personally I'm into Traveller not just because of the brand, but because it is the most fun sci-fi game out there. I love the systems and the style - and this book is no exception. I've no doubt that Mongoose will be reading your comments and taking notes, but if their product is still selling and they are making their own accounts meet their ends, then this is the bottom line.

I agree Bruce M, it really isn't worth the money *to me* either. Mongoose can, of course, charge what they feel like, and some people may want to splash the cash. I have no doubt that I will get the Print & PDF at some point as a much better deal. In the meantime the pricing of the core PDFs has completely put me off exploring the 2nd Edition of Traveller. Perhaps it is an emotional reaction to the price point, which is rare for me. There is a glut of other great SF games out there and coming, including Coriolis, Impulse Drive and Infinity and I will explore them instead. Bah, humph and grumble.

Traveller is a great game. I only played the original back in the 80's. I have been looking to run a Traveller game for my group but not at this price point for a PDF. I am not even going to pay $30 for their core book in PDF. But that is just me. I think that much or close to that much is to expensive for a PDF of any size. I do have most of the original set of books and may actually use those to run a game. But like you said there are loads of other Sci Fi RPG's out there (a friend was recently running a Savage Worlds Sci Fi) that can be just as fun. Just to note I picked up 3 different Sci Fi RPG books at Gencon, The Mutant Chronicles, Psionics, and Kromore. Kromore is not just Sci Fi though and the game spans a 10,000 year plus history so you can play anything from fantasy to sci fi.

If you don't get it then you're an idiot, it's not that hard to figure out.
Customer avatar
Rory H September 05, 2016 8:12 am UTC
Actually, I did get it and for all the gnashing of teeth (and now, even personal attacks) the truth is that people wouldn't be complaining if they didn't desperately want the product. I've got it and it rocks! :)

If you do buy this product, make sure you read the errata thread on the Mongoose Publishing forum for fixes. As of typing this it has 135 entries and is growing. Link below.

If this was a criticism of the physical copy I could concur with your points. However, the fact that Mongoose regularly updates it's PDFs based on feedback is something I'd actually see as a feature of the purchase, not something to disparage.

And, for me, this is an exciting release for the game - it really pushes the button in terms of accessible rules and presentation. Hopefully it can do for Spaceship design what Traveller already does for character generation - a really fun-to-use system.

The playtest for High Guard started in October of last year. Now in ten months time this errata could not be fixed prior to release? I'll save my money, thanks.
Customer avatar
Rory H August 22, 2016 4:15 am UTC
Your entitled to make your own purchase choices, but I think your criticisms aren't universally accepted or fair. I'm happy for a pdf to continue to incorporate errata into regular updates.

I would not purchase what is essentially a beta test document that is being promoted as a complete work. This thing is a mess.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
