D&D Volo's Guide to Monsters for Fantasy Grounds

Research has never been so dangerous...

Explore the breadth of D&D's monsters in this immersive 224-page volume filled with beautiful illustrations and in-depth lore. Volo's Guide to Monsters provides something exciting for players and Dungeon Masters everywhere!

The esteemed loremaster Volothamp Geddarm is back and he's written a fantastical dissertation, covering some of the most iconic monsters in the Forgotten Realms. Unfortunately, the Sage of Shadowdale himself, Elminster, doesn't believe Volo gets some of the important details quite right. Don't miss out as Volo and Elminster square off (academically speaking of course) to illuminate the uninitiated on creatures both common and obscure. Uncover the machinations of the mysterious Kraken Society, what is the origin of the bizarre froghemoth, or how to avoid participating in the ghastly reproductive cycle of the grotesque vargouille.

Dungeon Masters and players will get some much-needed guidance as you plan your next venture, traipsing about some dusty old ruin in search of treasure, lore, and let's not forget ... dangerous creatures whose horns, claws, fangs, heads, or even hides might comfortably adorn the walls of your trophy room. If you survive.

Here are just a few of the features you'll find in the D&D Volo's Guide to Monsters:

  • Monster Lore takes several iconic D&D monsters and provides additional information about their origins, their dispositions and behaviors, and their lairs—above and beyond what is written in the Monster Manual. Dive deep into the story behind D&D's most popular and iconic monsters, including beholders, mind flayers, and the yuan-ti, as well as classics like orcs, gnolls, and kobolds.
  • Character Races presents character races that are some of the more distinctive race options in the D&D multiverse, including the goblin, the orc, and the firbolg.
  • Bestiary provides game statistics and lore for nearly one hundred monsters suitable for any D&D campaign. Gain access to rules and story for dozens of monsters new to fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons, such as the froghemoth, the neogi, and the vargouille.

Dungeon Masters purchasing this module can use it to help expand the detail presented to players for other purchased adventures and accessories within the Forgotten Realms or to help craft unique experiences. New Story Templates are a unique feature in Fantasy Grounds to compile random data from several sources to create an endless supply of unique monsters. The tables and templates allow you to build a gnoll warband with a few clicks or describe the physical characteristics of your main beholder villain down to the color and shape of each eye.

This Module Includes:

  • the entire contents of Volo's Guide to Monsters accessory, divided into a DM only module and a Player's module
  • image handouts that can be shared with players collectively or individually
  • maps for several monsters
  • new portraits that players can use to represent their new and exciting monstrous characters
  • a custom decal extension to change the look of your Fantasy Grounds desktop
  • stats for all monsters presented in Volo's Guide to Monsters

Requirements: A license for Fantasy Grounds (Standard or Ultimate) or an active license subscription, with the built-in 5E Ruleset.

Recommended: D&D Complete Monster Class Pack is necessary for some of the random encounters to fully populate lists of minions, pets and allies.

$50 for a pdf is too bloody much. And, judging from the comments, it's not even that. Learn, Wizards...learn.

This product is not a PDF, but it is a digital add-on for Fantasy Grounds. It is one of our top sellers on our website and on Steam and has received great reviews on our forums. You should be able to get a sense for the product by reviewing the Publisher Preview.

I was expecting a PDF, and instead I'm told there's another service I have to pay for. Where's the refund at? If it's not a straight full refund, then this company has lost a customer.

I am pretty sure that DTRPG offers full refunds via customer support email requests. Please contact customer support and they should get you all squared away.

I'm the publisher for Fantasy Grounds and I don't have the ability to handle refunds on DTRPG. I am unaware of them denying anyone a refund for a similar issue. It is the weekend though and most RPG companies are small operations. I'm not sure if they have 24x7 support or not.

Was there something in the description of the product or the title that is misleading? If so, we can work to correct that. Fantasy Grounds is a very popular platform for running D&D and other roleplaying games and we have tried very hard to make it as clear as possible that this is a module for use with Fantasy Grounds.

I'd rather not continue this conversation on a public board, as I have some fairly strong opinions about you company and the exorbitant costs needed to be remotely usable.

Doug D....how do I request a credit for this title....I like the others expected we were getting a digital copy of the book in pdf form and for $56 that's what we should have gotten....I don't see a spot on the drive Thru page to request a credit or to contact them. Please advise ASAP. Thanks!

I'm sorry for the confusion. DTRPG will get you squared away with the refund. The description was accurate, but we uploaded a PDF for a preview and I think that was the cause of the confusion, because the default file type for the preview was set as PDF. I think it should be correct now and should show as EXE and still show a PDF preview (which wasn't even working the first time.)

I'd like to verify; I'm unable to see the book because I have to purchase a monthly subscription (Standard or Ultimate) in order to open it?

This product is not a PDF or book, but is an add-on for the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The screenshots are actual renditions of what the product looks like within the program. If you only wanted a PDF, you can request a refund through DriveThruRPG. If you decide to check out the software, we support a 30-day money back guarantee on our site and I'm sure DTRPG supports some form of refund policy as well. Fantasy Grounds is a popular tool for managing and running your campaign locally or fully online.

So i bought this here, and when i downloaded it it was only 6 pages. Then i went to the forgotten realms site and bought the 30 dollar one time fee, but i cant find where to open the full pdf, and i really don't want this whole situation as me essentially wasting 80 dollars, so if anyone could let me know how to get to the full 224 page document that would be very much appreciated

All of the add-ons for Fantasy Grounds are software conversions of the book contents. While it contains all of the contents of the book, it is delivered in a format different from a PDF. There are no PDFs available for this D&D product that I am aware of. We believe that Fantasy Grounds is a great way to enjoy D&D content and we stand behind our product 100%. You are welcome to try it out fully and ask questions on the forums to help get started. If you are at all unsatisfied, please request a refund for this product from DMsGuild.com and for the purchase of the base software from support@fantasygrounds.com and we will get you all sorted out.

Please check out the video in the product description here for a walk-through of the product. For the base application, there are also a number of videos available on the website under the wiki or on YouTube if you search for Fantasy Grounds. http://youtube.com/fantasygrounds

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
