Coriolis - The Third Horizon Core Book

“I’m getting a signal.” Dalil’s voice crackled over the com. “We’re close.” The navigator gazed into the darkness ahead, his face ghostly pale in the cold glow from the tabula in his hands.

Radwa nodded silently for her comrades to advance, approaching the strange ruins in the moonscape. The only sound they could hear was their own breathing through the air filters, and the soft crunch under their boots. The floodlights from the freighter Narzalus behind them cast long shadows of the trio.

“Something is wrong, boss.” The sharp voice of Jhara broke the silence. Her vulcan rifle hummed as the tall woman from Sadaal activated her weapon. Without turning, Radwa raised her hand to still her friend.

“Easy, Jha,” she whispered over the com.

The explorers shone their suit-mounted flashlights over the ruins. Alien signs were carved into the smooth dark surfaces. In the light, they seemed to be glowing.

Something slowly unraveled before them. A darkness rose from the surface of the dead moon, reaching towards the starry sky above them.

“Mercy of the Icons!” Radwa gasped, and felt a chill spread throughout her body.

Coriolis – The Third Horizon is a science fiction role-playing game from the makers of critically acclaimed Mutant: Year Zero (six-time nominee and winner of a Silver Ennie for Best Rules 2015).

Features:

  • Create your unique player character – including skills, talents, gear and relationships – in mere minutes.
  • Fight fast and furious battles, praying to the Icons to overcome your enemies.
  • Build and crew your own spaceship, to explore the many star systems of the Third Horizon.
  • Experience thrilling spaceship duels, using a game system that puts all player characters at the heart of the action.
  • Take part in the intrigue between powerful factions on the majestic space station Coriolis.
  • Uncover the mysteries of the Third Horizon, a rich tapestry of cultures that have settled the stars.

“The game's authors describe it as ‘Arabian Nights in space’ and it fulfills that brief marvelously. Style 5/5, Substance 5/5.”

Is anyone else having issues when printing it that the text near the bottom of pages seems to be fading out? Might just be the printer tho...

There are two corebook files available to download. How are they different?
I assume one is from 2018 and the other is from 2020? Is the changelog available somewhere?

What is the difference between the two core rule book .pdfs? The regular one and the one that has the _opt suffix?

I had hoped the art on page 289, the map of the Monolith, would have been fixed. It's still heavily pixelated, though...

Are there supposed to be hyperlinks in this? I'm using Adobe and it seems nothing is hyperlinked. I bought this yesterday and I love most everything else about the book so far, but I'm unpleasantly shocked that it's not thoroughly hyperlinked.

Where can I find a pdf copy of the Third Horizon map that’s supposed to be inside the cover, but apparently is not in the pdf of the main rulebook?

In addition to the black text on a dark background, it looks like some of the art is missing. Can we have a replacement file uploaded?

On Dec 17 2018 Fria Ligan posted a new PDF that fixes these issues on IOS (at least it does for me). It should be in your library.

I just purchased the pdf of Coriolis yesterday. There seems to be an issue with a lot of the text in Chapter 8. It looks to be black text on a black background, making it impossible to read. There are a few pages that are fine, and I think I can see what it was intended to be. The sidebars also seem to be fine. I deleted and re-downloaded it. It looks the same in both the browser and pdf reader. Is there an update that will fix this? I would really like to read about the setting.

Same issue, I’m guessing it’s a file error of some type. Everything after chapter 8 that is supposed to be white text on a black background is unreadable.

It looks like the black text is supposed to be on this light bluish background based on the few pages that aren’t messed up. I’m guessing that the blue background image somehow ended up in the wrong order on the pages.

I've got the same issue-- Do you happen to be using Preview on Mac OS X? It behaves the same on an iPhone too, so maybe it's an OS X & iOS PDF rendering issue of some sort, where the layering/visibility of some graphical elements is off kilter. As an experiment, it seems to appear "normal" on my work computer: Windows laptop running Adobe Reader... so I guess I'll try some alternative pdf viewers to see if that does the trick?

I’m using the Books app (previously ibooks) on my ipad to view it. It looked the same in Safari. I use Books for all my RPG pdf files and this is the only one I’ve had an issue with.

The new version of Books (formerly iBooks) on iPad/iphone changes the pdf rendering engine, and it's broken a few titles that used to work just fine. I downloaded Adobe Reader on the same iPad, and it renders them correctly (albeit slower). It's the same on OSX - Preview is screwed up, while Acrobat is all good.

I wish Apple would quit "upgrading" things that are working into things that are not. >:(

The rules look to be a big improvement over Mutant Year Zero. The game world for the Third Horizon is very well described and interesting.

This would make a beautifully rendered book... but it makes a crap PDF.

It's just too big.

There are a Table of Contents, and an Index, but they aren't hyperlinked, so they are a lot less useful than they could be.

I tried the PDF in five different readers: Moon+, Foxit, Sumatra(PC), EZ PDF, and Adobe Reader. Bookmarks only worked in Adobe and EZ PDF. In all of the readers it took between three and eight second to load a page. Once a page was loaded response times were better but still _slow_.

Honestly, if I drop $25 on a PDF, I expect it to load quickly, have working bookmarks, and be fully hyperlinked.

Sorry for your problems with the size of the PDF, and indeed it was too big. We have re-exported the PDF and optimised it much better so it should be very usable now.

You guys really need to give DTRPG coupons for the game to your KS backers who have it on PDF already, so we can actually rate and review the product on here and help spread the word about how awesome this game is. Only 5 ratings and 2 official reviews is scandalous! Same goes for the Atlas.

How extensive is the "watermarking" in the .pdf? Does it inhibit relying on the .pdf for running the game, and/or for printing select pages? Thanks...

Customer avatar
Mark P March 15, 2017 4:03 pm UTC
When DriveThru indicates a 'watermarked PDF' it basically means that your name and order number will appear in the bottom corner of each page (or maybe just the left-hand pages, I can't recall) throughout the PDF. Some publishers do this prevent piracy/file-sharing.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
