The Song of Orphans

A science fiction novel from Joseph Kessler Adams, author of many items available through Return to Jorune, including Third Edition supplements The Sobayid Atlas, and Sholari Companion and several fan-based titles over the past twenty years. He is also primary author for several of the Return to Jorune poducts.

Set on an ancient world we find Shelel, an adolescent from a telepath race of intelligent saurians, the Valu. They have little use for written languages because of a form of telepathy, a natural part of their being. Humans have learned to use a natural energy of 'mana', which seems denied to the Valu. They have achieved a uneasy truce in control of the world, and in the moment there is trading to be done, and profits to be made.

While on a trading journey to the East, Shelel and her clan encounter a wizard and his human servant, Fyr. Fyr is of particular interest to the girl. The servant is an orphan, and for an individual who has never experienced "alone", it is a a mystery she must explore. Fyr finds her telepathic investigations intrusive. He never asked to be an orphan and is haunted by many parts of his past. His minor abilities with mana further intrigues Shelel and she presses further to satisfy her own curiosity.

The mission moves east, but things sour leaving Shelel and Fyr find themselves alone and pursued. Fyr finds himself the target of a revenge required by honor and Shelel finds ourself outcasted from her clan because she helped him. They are both supposed to die. There is hope of refuge in the islands of the great western sea, so they join forces for a return to where they began, and beyond. They must find a way to survive, despite Shelel's repeated intrustions into his thoughts and memories - she cannot help it.

Their journey finds it is more than just their individual survival, for Fyr's magic contact has made him the focus of an evil that is returning to the world. It begins to change Shelel as it drains Fyr and she discovers she may be his only hope for simple survival. As they go, she composes a history in the preferred format of her people - the Song of Orphans.

Hello,

can you tell me if this product is Savage Worlds related (as indicated in Rule System(s))? For me it seems like a novel with no relation to any roleplaying system at all.

Thx

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
