HYPERLANES Corebook

Adventure at hyperspeed, smirking at the authorities along the way. Tramp around a hostile galaxy in a starship held together with spit and pluck. You’re a motley crew of misfits, gathered by chance, venting your frustrations through witty barbs and alien howls.

Strap in, kid. We’re gunna burn across the sky ‘til the stars become lines.

HYPERLANES is the gaming technology that takes you there. We begin with all new Classes and Archetypes, reverse engineered from the basic building blocks of the D&D Player’s Handbook, but reprogrammed for scifi adventuring among the stars, integrating starship battle abilities from the ground up. We splice in all new Feats for cinematic action, systems for building alien species and robot chassis as Races, and iconic Backgrounds to add dimensionality to your spacer.

We don’t stop there.

We hook up a hard hitting chapter on armor clad soldiers, fringe-planet crime lords, and monstrous alien threats. We install a honed system for enabling memorable space battles, designed to send a chill up your spine as you blast hostile spacecraft out of the starry sky. We bury you in “magical items” recast as scientific marvels and scavenged technology from forgotten civilizations.

HYPERLANES is a humming engine of science fiction action and it’s what you need to adapt your favorite star spanning adventure setting to your living room cockpit. We take inspiration from such classics as Star WarsFireflyCowboy Bebop, and Guardians of the Galaxy. We’re pretty sure this is the action scifi supplement you’ve been looking for.

This book was Kickstarted in December 2016 and we are happy to report that it successfully funded at over $40,000. Stretch goals from such an amazing total allowed us to hire on additional writers and artists and really make this book something memorable.

Thankyou to all our wonderful backers.

What, if any, parts of Hyperlanes are considered Open Gaming Content (and thus potentially reproducible in another commercial text)?

Just bought the .pdf yesterday. I quite enjoy what you did to 5e, my man. On a side note, I have a question. In Ch. 6, where it explains the size of vehicles, you said,
"Vehicles have a size, just as creatures do, ranging from tiny
to gargantuan. This is mostly just to let you know how many
squares the vehicle should take up on the grid."

The amount of squares taken up by the vehicle would be the same amount that would be taken up by a creature or NPC of relative size, correct?

For which version of the PHB is this? Third, Fourth, Fifth...?

Assuming you mean which edition of D&D - it's based on the D&D 5th edition rules.

Will there be a version of this which is a complete game (complete list of skills, complete list of damage types, complete list of feats, and so on)?

Most likely not. There are a lot of things that we don't include from the PHB because they're not available under the Open Game License. The SRD doesn't even include ability scores, for instance. Most of the time though, you shouldn't need to look too much up in your base D&D books.

Posted this on the Kickstarter, too, but never saw it addressed: Some of the classes seem to have some errors. The genius specialties other than Engineer all seem to be missing a level 10 feature. The Outlaw Saboteur has a level 6 feature when outlaw archetypes only seem to get features at 3, 9, 13, and 17.
There might be more errors than this, but this was just something I noticed.
I'm looking at version 1.2.

Hi, I've read that you planned to release Unfolding Starscapes sometime soon. Do you have a hard date in mind, or is that still a little far off?

Loving the way this has been designed to integrate with the 5E rules.

A few questions/requests....

(1) On ships, what does: "Little 1, Mobile 1, Resistant 1, Vulnerable 1" mean in the rules, or is this just a guide?

(2) Could we get a version number within the PDF.

(3) Also a separate PDF detailing the changes as some of us have purchased the hardcover version and it would help to have an errata document that we can print off.

Howdy!

For the feat Procedural Gambits, there seems to be no hard limit to how many procedures the character can learn beyond the gambit must be half the characters level round up. What is the limit for pulling these procedures? Should they use the Genius gambit track at half their level round up?
My apologies if this is clearly explained and I'm just not grokking it.

I'm getting geared to use part of this in my current 5th ed game and plan on using some Hellscapes as well once it comes out. The nifty part of a party finding a way to cross universes, plains, and dimensions .....

The Science Vessel is the only vehicle that grants tricks and also gambits that aren't tied to a specific battlestation. Who gets to use those?

Also one of those gambits is Reverse Polarity, which only shows up for one other vehicle and an NPC and isn't listed anywhere in the Gambit section.

Can you guess what Starship I'm trying to get my DM to let my Pilot start with?

Overall the book looks great and I can't wait to sit down and play it.

How does psionics, force, or magic work in this? Also is there a contents page you can share?!

Hey Barry, so the rules here are designed to simply integrate with most existing D&D rules. You can run with a wizard or bring in NPCs with spells if you want and it generally all works together fine. We're also in the process of finishing up a book with hit with our Kickstarter campaign stretch goals called Unfolding Starscapes that specifically addresses the issue of crossover between sci-fi and fantasy. That should be up on Drivethru for the general public in the next few weeks.

As for contents, I'll adjust the preview pages so you can see the first page of the Table of Contents. I guess right now you're only seeing the second one.

I have been developing a campaign specifically geared to this product, a story I've been trying to get out of my head for years. I got excited at the prospect of seeing how these rules would handle psychic phenomena while creating alien races when the Psychic cultural trait appeared, taunting me. I continued to create my universe and then dove into the beginnings of the journey.

Long story short: I'm really only curious as to the nature of psychic phenomena within the scope and realms of Hyperlanes as, after Cultural Traits, nothing else is said or heard of that I have come across (possibly a tad frantic in my searching). And since 5E rules on psionics are currently only in Unearthed Arcana, I'm left wondering if you fine folks are developing the idea more, or just leaving it as is.

I can adapt the UA Mystic into what I need and then recreate gambit cards from that if I must. I've more or less been awaiting the rest of the items from the Kickstarter.

Todd, the 1.2 is the newest version. The others are the older versions. We'll pull them out of there soon so there's no more confusion. It's just that we've been updating the file a bit as our backers have sent us feedback.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
