SPARKS: Dan Smith Stockpile

Way back in the late 20th century, I decided it would be groovy and useful to put paper miniatures into font form. I did some crude drawings of my own for a test file, then called on the mighty Dan Smith, who I knew as an artist from his work on the World of Darkness books for White Wolf, Shadowrun for FASA, GURPS for Steve Jackson Games (including my own GURPS Warehouse 23) and more. He thought it sounded fun, so he set to work on the artwork for the Dan Smith Sampler, the world's very first paper-minis font. The original Sampler had just ten minis (20 pieces of art, since every Spark has front and back illustrations), and after the Sparks line grew over the next few years, we revisited it to add a bunch more, bringing it up to a full-sized set of 26 (with a couple extra "twin" alternates as well), the most awesome and varied multi-genre set we could manage. We changed the name to the Dan Smith Stockpile, and it's been that way since. Here's the lineup:

  • Bigass Ogre (A/a): Seven hundred pounds of muscle, bone, and teeth, Bigass enjoys scooping out peasant huts and eating the soft insides, ripping up small trees to use as wiffle-bats, and underwater photography. He's an Aries, and girls - he's single.
  • Bugg (B/b): A thoughtful scientist, an insectoid alchemist, or an explorer, perhaps? Or maybe that flask he's holding is some kind of powerful grenade . . .
  • Daisy (C/c) and Maisie (1/!): Twin sisters, lookin' fer trouble, love, and fresh ammunition. Don't be fooled - Daisy's the right-handed one! She and her mirror-image sister use their purses as their primary fighting weapons. The gun's just for backup.
  • Eurotrash (D/d): He's run heroin through Hong Kong, guns in Amsterdam and bootleg copies of It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown through the streets of Los Angeles. His guns and his ponytail, combined, are slightly wittier than he is, but he delivers great one-liners.
  • Ragnarok Joe (E/e) and Phil (2/@): More twins (for easier-to-handle hordes) - Fresh from the Dungeons of Unspeakable Odors and still itching for a fight, these dwarf warriors need a bath - a bloodbath!
  • Star Lawman (F/f): It's been 4.4 Standard Hours since he's had a donut, so don't crack jokes. His armor's tough, his nerves are like steel, and his gun can spit hot plasma accurately out to seven hundred meters. All he needs now is a bavarian creme.
  • Object (G/g): Maybe he's an elemental, a half-ton of earth and rock summoned up to build a castle - or tear it down! Maybe he's a superpowered, radioactive mutant! Maybe he's Larry Wilton, champion mud-wrestling referee, on his way home from work and starting to dry out.
  • Skeletomancer (H/h): The Necro-master himself, carved with the mystic schwa and coursing with magical energies, this fearsome skeleton-sorcerer doesn't NEED hands - his magic is powerful enough to handle puny adventurers. Take him on.
  • Urban Legend (I/i): The real monster lurks beneath the surface, and this is just ONE of his feeder-tentacles. It's 10 o'clock. Do you know where your children are?
  • Sorcerer (J/j): His staff is topped with the mystic Eye of Kreskin, and beneath his robes stands the figure of a man who spends a lot of time sitting on his duff. His powers are lethal, though, so keep your distance, and pay him the proper respect.
  • Argar (K/k): A happy-go-lucky space pirate from just beyond Sirius, and captain of the starship Strangely Brown, Ubu Gesh is an Argar, a sentient canoid. He found the blade in the hold of the last ship he plundered, and he's practising with it. Sit, Ubu, sit!
  • Baron Demise (L/l): When he's not plotting the destruction of peaceful midwestern cities or contemplating the tax benefits of world domination, he's stewing over the stubborn, continued existence of the superheroes he never manages to kill. His doom-cane can deliver 84,000 necrowatts of pure Death Energy. He hides his car keys in his left eyesocket.
  • Eddie Bolus, Freelance (M/m): Eddie's a nice kid in a nasty, cyberpunk city, making good the best he can - by being a little bit faster, a little bit smarter, and a little bit better armored than the sleaze and thugs around him. He's not what you'd call a hero, really . . . but if you pay him to do a job, the job gets done.
  • Cyborg/21 (N/n): Jeff "Mondo" Perkins lost a toe on his right foot as the result of a drunken bar bet (he won) . . . He went to a street doc's Body Garage to get it fixed up, and came out of the anasthetic fog as Cyborg/21, trapped in a secret corporate hit mission. He survived that, and made good on his own, working with Eddie and using his built-in radio to impress girls.
  • Cheerful Vampire (O/o): It looks like bullets aren't the answer . . . they just make him giggle. He's bleeding, though - maybe that means he fed recently, and he's not hungry anymore? Well, maybe. But now that you've shot him, he's losing his lunch and needs a replacement: you.
  • Cop (P/p): A sworn officer of the law, complete with racked shotgun, surly disposition, and impenetrable mirrored sunglasses. Joke all you want about why he wanted to be an authority figure . . . He's not trying to compensate for anything except some punk's lack of respect for Law and Order (and maybe an end-of-the-month ticket quota).
  • Dahlia (Q/q): Fishnets and kris blades are just two of the tools she uses to trap and kill . . . Some people think she's undead. Others just assume the chilly skin temperature is a reflection of an icy disposition.
  • Demi-Zombie (R/r): Yes, of course his name is Eric. And just because he doesn't have legs doesn't mean he can't be hungry for brains . . . Ugh. Intenstine tracks.
  • D'mon (S/s): Sworn to oppose Baron Demise and the other members of the International Death Cartel, D'mon was summoned to this earthly plane by a wicked sorcerer intending to use him to destroy New York. Surprise, buddy. Not all demons are evil, and some of them don't like to be ordered around.[An image of the fearsome GR-881]
  • Gorna (T/t): A barbarian princess from the Bolai Hills, Gorna never seems to run out of bladed weaponry to slice and dice with . . . but when she needs to get flashy, she whips the sharpened half-moon symbol of her tribe from her necklace, and lets it fly!
  • GR-881 (U/u): He prefers to be called "Max." But he also prefers to grab human skulls and crush them in a way that creates an inconveneint mess on the corridor ceiling. The cleaning robots hate him for that, and Max resents them for not having skulls.
  • Mushroom Man (V/v): A dutiful guard to the Spore King himself, Luphlaggo is a strong and honorable mycoknight - one of the sacred guardians of the Mushroom People. He's very friendly if you're not treating him as a threat, but beware of his angry side . . . he doesn't need light to see.
  • Saucy Jack (W/w): A demon shrouded in London Fog (and we don't just mean the dapper overcoat and suit) . . . Saucy Jack is naughty, haughty, murderous, and musical. He's killed thousands, and he framed Scotty. Beware.
  • Shade (X/x): A lonely spirit of a long-dead soldier, the Shade will be lonely no more . . . his evil summoner is busy creating thousands much like him to send down into the village to fetch the child spoke of in the prophecies.
  • Shaman Ukhro (Y/y): A leader of the Ruhlok tribe of Simians, Ukhro bears the holy Rod of Modra, and the Twin Bigass Firearms of Lamu-no. He can play the piano with his feet and Chutes and Ladders with his nephew. And his planet? It's Earth . . . EARTH!
  • Zombie Chick (Z/z): She's got a fresh human head that she hasn't even finished yet, and she's still going around bumming for brains. That's just greedy. Eric likes to lope along behind her, though, to watch her skirt.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
