The Wild West Map

2018 ENnie Awards Nominee - BEST ART COVER; BEST MONSTER/ADVERSARY

Saddle up! Get yourself a posse together and have a look-see what’s over that hill. There’s strange rumors coming in from the whisperin’ desert. You’d best put a round in that iron and make haste!

Down Darker Trails is a new setting for Call of Cthulhu—the American West of the late 19th century. The era of gold rushes, outlaws and lawmen, discovery and expansion.

Rub shoulders with the likes of Wild Bill Hickok, Crazy Horse, and Calamity Jane, while journeying through towns like Deadwood and Dodge City—names and places that have transcended history to become legend. Down these dark trails the taint of the Cthulhu Mythos stirs, ready to lure the unwary and tempt the power hungry with whispered secrets of cosmic knowledge. This is a West of hidden worlds, lost treasures and cities, dubious deals and unsavory alliances. A land filled with beauty, mystery, terror—and wild adventure!

Here you will find the means to create Old West investigators, new occupations, new pulp talents, and new skills. Captured in text and image is the history of the Old West, famous individuals, playing American Indian heroes, notable places and sites, as well as inspiration and guidance on bringing the terrors and mysteries of the Great Old Ones into your games.

Two complete towns, the gold-hungry Pawheton and San Rafael on the Texas border, are fully detailed, providing Keepers with ready-made inhabitants and locales from which to stage campaigns. Four different Lost Worlds are discussed, from the weird subterranean world of K’n-yan to the eerie Shadow Desert.

Packed with advice on creating campaigns and adventures, including two complete introductory-level adventures:

  • Scanlon’s Daughter—a murder mystery set between two feuding Texas ranches.
  • Something From Down There—join the rescue of a group of missing miners whose digging stirred things best left forgotten

Special character sheets are included in the download package.

The Down Darker Trails product line is useable with both Call of Cthulhu and Pulp Cthulhu. For more adventures in the Down Darker Trails setting see the next release in the line, Shadows over Stillwater.

PURCHASER
Foreword: I am not a weapon expert.

Reading the shotguns weapons table (p42) I noticed that the prices follow a decreasing order while efficacy of the weapons grows so the shotgun with the less damage (the other characteristics are the same for all of them) costs more then the better one.
Misprint? If yes, how to correct it?

I would love to get my hands on a printer-friendly character sheet for DDT and Pulp Cthulhu too. I believe that Chaoisum has them already and they might be form-fillable too. They are just plain black text on white (no fancy backgrounds). Anyone here seen them?

Yee-hog Sothoth!!!

I have never been a huge fan of the Old West (movies etc), but Down Darker Trails has piqued my interest. This book has really been responsible for me digging into the history of both the US and Mexico.

I'm even eating a lot more 'Old Westery' (a lotta Taco Bell) and I have switched from Scotch to Tequila.

Also movies..., Valley of Gwangi, Dead Birds (mythosy), Bone Tomahawk, Dead Man, The Burrowers, Lone Ranger (not that bad) El Topo...plus all the spaghetti westerns.

Very well done book. Awesome Art. Great bargain. Really gets you in the mood for Cowboy vs. Cthuloid tomfoolery.

One of the main settings, San Rafael, which's name I noticed mention in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. The scene of the river siege.

Anyway-
I have been a lapsed Keeper...DDT is TNT for creative juices.

Can this module be run with just 7th edition vanilla CoC or does it also need Pulp CoC?

No it doesn't need Pulp Cthulhu. Playing the "Pulp" style is an option, but not required. Only needs 7th Edition Keepers book and you are good to go. If you're experienced with the CoC system, you could easily make it work for 6th Edition CoC too.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
