DDAL00-04 Winter's Flame (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This year’s Midwinter holiday efforts have been met with unusual obstacles: small stockpiles rummaged through, foods spoiling, ale casks leaking, festive clothes torn up, and crucial pembelon fruits missing.

With schedules and deadlines rigid, any bigger bumps in the road might result in disaster. Who would want to keep the people of Chult from celebrating this long-revered holiday?

A two-hour adventure for 1st - 4th level characters by Ryan Wheaton.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

My kids (ages 11 & 13 + their friends) really liked this one. Has skill checks galore (Carnival games!) and a solve the mystery (and maybe don't have to kill the big bad) plot.

I was thoroughly disappointed by this adventure. The boxed text was impenetrable, the plot was thinly applied, and the pacing was ill-kept given the expectation to pad it out with carnival games that don't generally appeal to a table of randomized AL players.

I am genuinely perplexed that it is so highly rated. Somewhere in here was a good adventure, but I was not able to implement it in its current state. I would recommend a rewrite, and at least one more encounter. Probably one that gives better exposition for the fruit and the old wizard. I'd give this adventure 2 stars if I could, and I wish that I could ask for my money back.

Hi All!

I ran a game for some friends who were new to the game over the winter holiday. I used this adventure as the starting point for the one-shot I ran for my friends and they absolutely loved it! I added a few more encounters and some additional information in order to make the adventure a complete one-shot that gave an overview of all that our wonderful game has to offer. (Mainly, I added an introduction combat encounter, and an exploration encounter.)

I've uploaded my supplemental encounters to this adventure here on DMs Guild. Feel free to use both this adventure and my supplement to run a festive new player-friendly one-shot!

I really liked running this adventure. I think it could have used some more prizes for the games like someone else said, but it's a small complaint. My players found the games a little tedious, but overall enjoyed themselves. I used it as an intro to Port Nyanzaru/Chult for season 7 adventures, and I think it worked perfectly as a low-stakes first session.

Who doesn't love a festival? And this is a great fun faire full of games and prizes, missing some rides and sickeningly delicious deep fried foods, but there is a good feeling of a carnival present.
The games are a little weak, and kind of end up just being a selection of D20 rolls, but there's enough going on that players could imaginatively deal with the carnies and their games. The only unfortunate downside is it really needs a few extra non-magic prizes to buy with excess tickets. Who wouldn't want to win a stuffed toy flying snake?
And then out of no ware a plot!!! But in this instance the sudden appearance of the final boss actually works in this adventure's favor. It's a little silly and fun and that's how a good trip to the faire should be. If only there was a Ferris wheel though.
Characters:
Slab is a great big softy. He's cute and as fun to play as he is to interact with. How can you not love a villain that you agree with?...See more

I loved running this, but my players turned the entire first part into a murder-hobo festival, attacking every commoner that passed by and then going into PVP territory. This is one of my favorite modules ever, but unfortunately it doesn't work with every group, especially groups that love combat and nothing else.

Hahaha, Mine did too! they literally burned the whole festival down then blamed it on a drunken man from Sweden. I love players

Spoilers:
the 1st half of the module will either be very exciting, or very boring based on your players interests. My party enjoyed the skill tests, but the "prize" was left behind, at the time we didn't realize that common magic items did not count against your magic item limit.
the 2nd half of the module I ran in theater of the mind, and although I thought the players would be annoyed that they had little impact on the fight, it turned out they enjoyed getting NPC's to safety and holding back the monster

Suggestion : add a "Games host" to present the games in a friendlier way than what Ouen Azemar is capable of

Hi Ryan! I have fully converted your module "DDAL00-04 Winter's Flame" for use with Fantasy Grounds for my own personal use. Please contact me if you would like it made available to others. It is prepared to a level where I would feel comfortable publishing it.

A few questions:
1. How large is the Galeb Duhr? (Page 3 refers to it as a "15 foot Galeb Duhr")
2. Is the "Middle" somewhere between Port Nyanzaru and Fort Beluarian? Like Promontory Point Utah? (The site where they completed The Transcontinental Railroad)
3. Do the carnival games take place in Port Nyanzaru, or at this "Middle" location (assuming question 2 is yes)

A map isn't really necessary for this module...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
