Troll in the Corner's Magical Emporium: Mirkmoot's Magical Accouterments for Creatures Small and Great [PFRPG]
by Ashley C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/18/2010 11:49:39

Very well written and funny too! Have not had a chance to use any items in my game yet but enjoyed reading the descriptions which gave me some good ideas for my game. I especially look forward to giving the halfling bard in the group the lute I won't spoil the description of this magic lute. I will definitely be looking at buying more the the Troll in the Corner PDFs, very impressed.

The World of Aruneus - Orcs! A Player Character Expansion [PFRPG]
by Ron T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/18/2010 11:29:13

I very much enjoyed this expansion to the Pathfinder universe.

We tend to think of orcs as unsophisticated SOBs who exist as barbaric, drooling, blood thirsty curs. Here's a new player character race expansion that paints orcs more like steppe tribes from the late 14th century.

These orcs have a history, a society that can be easily integrated into a current campaign and they introduce a player character race that in my mind lends more to role playing and less to some overpowered, over-tweaked new half dragon/half merman conglomerate.

A previous reviewer stated that the prestige class available here, the War Leader lent more to roleplaying as well. I couldn't agree more. Here's a prestige class that essentially lets the player character lead an entire clan of orcs. That is, if the GM allows it and if they can fight, finagle and politic their way up the chain.

Some may look at it and think it an underpowered prestige class but I do not. It's a class a GM could base an entire campaign around.

The creatures included are a mixed bag. The Hram is interesting as an addition to the descriptive narrative but as a whole new species of horse may be unnecessary. The Penumbral Atavus is a wonderful creature that ties in with the War Leader prestige class and again offers more RP choices.

The inclusion of NPCs is a good thing. It gives us a few pre-made orcs and also shows what even a low level War Leader is capable of.

The magical items add a bit of flavor and are nice to have but I would have been just as happy with this expansion if they were not included.

Troll in the Corner's Magical Emporium: Mirkmoot's Magical Accouterments for Creatures Small and Great [PFRPG]
by Nick N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/16/2010 18:13:52

As with Troll ITC products, my opinion might be considered biased because I got my copy free, but I will try to remain objective and honest.

Ben let out a whole lot of crazy for this one. It was actually nice to see him take a break from the seriousness of Aruneus and just to have a light heart-ed read, and this is definitely that.

The set of magic items are all flawed by design, with some hilarious results. He did a good job of keeping things low level and fair priced, so the end result is a bunch of ready to use items that could really go in any session right away.

I can't see bringing these items into a serious campaign, certainly not all of them anyhow, but if you are running something more casual and for a lot of laughs, or just a short one shot session, these items could easily find a place in the treasure piles or on a bazaar merchant's table.

There's a fair amount of repetition in the names, which is fine because they come from a limited Intelligence Goblin Wizard, but I felt like a little more creativity could have been used rather than prefixing each item with "en". It's hard to be critical of a product that is obviously not meant to be scrutinized, but I also felt like the character Mirkmoot really stole the show, but we never actually really got to meet him. Only through description from a faceless, non-descript, and all too modern merchant did we learn anything of the character that most held my attention. It's not to say Ben shouldn't have written the product this way, it is likely a large part of what made Mirkmoot so alluring, but I could have used a little more direct from the source.

That said, I think the real value I got out of this is that it just got me thinking in a different way. Several items are plays on (nonsense)words that easily lead me down other similar ideas, and every one of the items seems to me to be well balanced due to inherit bugs in the Goblin Mirkmoot's design. I think Ben has found a really fun character in Mirkmoot, and I suspect we'll see him back for more magic items or cameos in future products, you can tell he really likes the character ... and for good reason. Go for the buck buy, it's worth it for a couple of laughs, but the real return on investment is the long term ideas you'll glean from this.

This is the most fun I've had reading a magic item PDF in a long time. It's written in a humorous style which carries through the entire document and emphasises how these items could be inserted into your campaign to have a bit of fun with your players.

You get 12 items, all of which are fairly inexpensive and lower level and almost all of which are designed for small statured PCs.

Being that they were created by a goblin wizard who's just barely qualified for the title of wizard, they all have their quirks as well. The odd spelling of some items at first threw me off but by the end of the document I was 'in to it' and thought it added great flavor.

For some gaming groups this may not be the best but I know many folks who would love to put one or more of these into their gamer's hands and watch what happens.

A few stand out items:

Mirkmoot's Helm of Engloryateing - a great way to increase the CHA stat of one of your players and confuse the heck out of the group for a little while.

The Bardy Lute of Unbardsuckifying - This one just made me laugh. If I'm not mistaken there's also a reference to Gamers: Dorkness Rising here.

Helm of Enseeing Really Far - does what it advertises in a novel way. I am certainly going to introduce this to my players.

For a dollar, I think this is well worth it. My only gripe is the artwork for the items which is a little lackluster. Other than that, I'm going to use most if not all of these, which makes it a dollar well spent.

The World of Aruneus - Orcs! A Player Character Expansion [PFRPG]
by Jen P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/14/2010 11:16:32

I got hooked on the Arunues world last week. I've been waiting for the orcs to arrive so I could start a campaign in the world with my group of five players, one of them is planning on playing an orc.

I'm not at all disappoint in this addition! The Orcs are great - slightly more powerful than a half orc as far as character generation goes, which is as it should be.

What really makes this shine is the background on the orcs. I have a motivation for my Orc PC now and the whole orcish culture to fall back on. I love the image of orcs as sort of Mongols of the northern reaches.

The Prestige class included in this is subtly powerful. There isn't any overt magic or overpowering abilities. What you do get is a role playing opportunity to have an orc player character who is also a leader of men. Well, leader of orcs. I like this - it's different enough from the included core prestige classes to make it worth playing.

The npcs are a nice touch. Easy to use, pre-packaged orcs. I wish more expansions would do this.

The Hram horse is okay - nothing special as far as beasts go but necessary to the back story of the orcs.

The Penumbral Atavus is one of my favourite parts of this whole expansion. I'm certainly going to use this in my campaign!

The magical items are okay - again nothing special, perhaps added as an afterthought?

I've given this four out of five stars for two reasons. The magical items are okay but not great. The artwork is again, okay but not great.

The price is good for getting a lot of information you can plonk right into your game and run with. A new race, a new prestige class, npcs, beasts, and pages of background and culture. Certainly a useful addition to my Pathfinder game.

The World of Aruneus - Orcs! A Player Character Expansion [PFRPG]
by erathoniel w. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/13/2010 21:56:45

The nice thing about this is that it is very good on flavor. You do not just have orcs out of nowhere, they have a history, political structure, et cetera. I am more familiar with d20 than Pathfinder, so I can't really tell this for sure, but it does seem a mite unbalanced on the favor of orcs.

The art is decent, though nothing outstanding, it gets the point across and illustrates concepts. However, the bit of photoshopper in me would request that in the future, images with a white background should be cut out and down to size. It also seems one image was used multiple times, though it is not the only image.

All in all? Good flavor, good stuff, potentially unbalanced. But, it's cheap, and if you need something for a campaign (in this setting or not), this will do well.

Troll in the Corner's Magical Emporium: Masks of Magic & More! [PFRPG]
by Tim R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/11/2010 17:16:26

Masks of Magic & More is a small collection of magic items designed for the PFRPG system, and 0.99 is a small price to pay for 10 new items. However, I have some issues with the details within. I think that most of the items are overpowered for their rated cost, particularly (as one other reviewer notes) the Mask of Powders. Hand this to a player and they will quickly bypass much of your hard obstacles in a spectacular Holi-like celebration of their newfound power. That said, there are gems in here. I love the Bag 'o Bones. It's a worthwhile addition to most any campaign.

The aspect of this supplement that simultaneously pleased and disappointed me the most is the intro flavor. The narrative welcoming the reader to the shop is completely enticing; and then it ends. I believe that this unfortunately weakens the potential for this supplement. Upon reading the introduction, I began to envision a complete magical shop with a wacky NPC proprietor who could guide me through the various artifacts he had to offer. Instead, the remaining pages were relatively banal descriptions and stat blocks for the magical items.

So, I applaud a solid effort, but at the end it left me wanting. 3 stars.

The World of Aruneus - Contagion Infected Zombies [PFRPG]
by Jen P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/08/2010 14:52:57

After purchasing a magic items supplement Masks of Magic & More from Troll in the Corner I decided to check out the zombies.

I LOVE this little book! If you like classic movie zombies like Dawn of the Dead - the kind that can't run and don't think very much, you will love this! It has everything you need to throw a nasty zombie outbreak into your game.

Apparently it's part of a larger world that Troll in the Corner is building, which looks interesting. But if you're just in it for the zombies this is a great book! I can see where there may be a bit of bickering over the rules but for the most part it looks solid. The zombies are nasty if you're playing with human characters - 100% fatal. Except there's a cure, a very expensive cure added in to the mix.

As a long time D&D player who converted to Pathfinder the day the source book became available, I can happily say I very much enjoyed this supplement!

I can't wait to unleash the Sword of Minkin'Mar on my party.

There are four masks (five if you count the special orcs only addition) and five additional magical items which I think will add a lot of flavor to our campaign.

The only reason I've given this four stars out of five is that it may not be the best for an inexperienced GM. It leaves a lot of wiggle room for these various items in terms of how they'll be implemented in the game. Personally, I like that but inexperienced GMs may find it hard to place these items effectively in their campaign.

The items runt he gamut from inexpensive and good for low level characters to powerful and great for higher level characters. The one cursed item, the Heart Plug is pretty nasty!

Certainly worth a dollar.

My opinion might be considered biased since I started writing for TrollITC and I got a free copy of this, but I think this is his best supplement yet.

Nice number of items so it felt "worth the purchase". Each item had a fair amount of detail, I think Ben is starting to get the swing of how to do these write-ups.

I had a few issues with what may be overpowered bonuses, but that might be chalked up to personal taste for campaign power level. There is one particular item that stands out to me as an immediate "problem child" in game, the Powder Mask. Among its many overpowered abilities, a nearly at will use of True Strike seems a bit much for any priced item.

I spoke with Ben this morning about this product, and I think he's actually doing himself a disservice by not advertising the fact that he worked with an anthroplogist to create some of these items. Each one of these creations has a lot of character with some hints of real world myths.

While Ben is getting better, I get the impression that he's also a loose sort of GM. He covers more in this document than his previous magic item list, but he still leaves some key specifics to the reader's imagination. I'd prefer a little more grounding than he gives, but for those who like the freedom, this is good.

All-in-all I'd say skip the Powder Mask and tone down some of the bonuses a bit, and this product is great. A steal at 99 cents, and has some really fun concepts for D&D, Pathfinder, or even if you just want items not rules, any fantasy system.
