The Immortal: Unliving
by Sean H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/28/2007 00:00:00

The Immortal - Unliving: Golems of Flesh and Mechanical Men by UKG Publishing is a sourcebook for D20 fantasy. Weighing in at a hefty 130 pages (128 after cover and OGL, 124/123 for the printer friendly version) with a clean and easy to read layouts in both versions, the artwork is competent and thematic.

This is a book that expands on the classic flesh golem, even providing rules for them as player characters, and giving mechanical men, sentient clockwork beings and the like, the same treatment. It begins with an introduction covering such matters as the history of golems in myth and fiction, how golems fit into a fantasy world and how such can fit into a game world. As well as how golem perceives (and are perceived) by the world.

This product is broken into three main sections, Section I is Unliving Rules. Many variant and optional rules are included here such as additional components or mechanisms, a set of aging rules allowing for constructs that evolve as they get older. New feats are presented, some of which can be taken by non-construct characters. New magic items such as clockwork arms and legs to replace those lost as well as tool to assist in the creation of golems and constructs.

Section II is a Catalogue of the Unliving. New golems and constructs of all shapes and sizes are presented, twenty construct creatures and seven templates including the conversion of the flesh golem into a template and a ?sentient? template. Several have notes for conversion to use as characters. Many of the constructs are quite interesting and useful, the toy soldier swarm being particularly clever, but far too many have the golem?s wide spectrum immunity to magic. Other mechanisms to simulate the difficulty of effect constructs with magic should have been tried as well.

Section III is Mad Science. Complete with the Mad Scientist prestige class, which builds constructs and strange technologies (but, unfortunately, it lacks the HD and skills per level). Rules for using mad science to replicate magical effects and an example mad scientist?s castle round out the product.

This is a good, solid product full of useful ideas and options, however not everyone will want to mix mad science with their fantasy. Even removing the mad science, there are still many useful things to add into a fantasy campaign.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

Dice and Dramatics
by Chris G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/22/2007 00:00:00

If this book had a tag line, I?d suggest ?Putting the Role back in Role Playing?. Very simply this book is about role playing better. From the introduction to the final page before the Open Game License, this book offers advice and options to help role play and define a character. It has advice for the novice and the master, the player and the dungeon master. The advice is good, solid, and thorough

Dice and Dramatics is the first book by Ultramyth Design. The author, Ben Mowbray, shows a clear understanding of character design and how to get the most out of details. The pdf is 60 pages in length including the cover and OGL. The file comes as a zip file that is a bit over seven megs in size. After the file is unzipped the pdf is a little over eleven megs.

The pdf is laid out well. It is very easy to read from the computer screen and it is in typical dual columns. The border is a nice color fade that makes the pages look a bit aged. The art is light and does a nice job of breaking up the text. There are also a few tables and other means that make reading easy. The pdf is well book marked making it easy to find things quickly.

Dice and Dramatics starts with a nice introduction. It also has a neat section called ?Who should read this book.? This section not only tells who should be reading this book but why they should. The book is for both PCs and DM but for different reasons. I like this little section because it shows the author was thinking how the audience can use his book. After that is a small summary of each chapter, and then a list of gaming terms with their definitions. It?s another small section, but again shows the author is thinking about his audience. Not all gamers will know what all the terms are, so including them just makes sure all the readers are on the same page. The last thing in the intro section is a little note from the author to the reader. It tells a little what the book started out as and how it evolved.

The first chapter is about getting to know your character. It includes ideas for detailing the characters appearance and personality. It also has a brilliant idea of basing weight off the physical scores. So, a stronger character weighs more then a weak one for instance. It?s a simple detail that is nicely done. The chapter describes the personality of all the classes from the PHB. The closer the character is to being typical of the class the more useful these will be. One area that I?ve seen even veterans miss is including skills and feats into ones background and personality. The character had to learn these things somewhere and it?s good to think about that with the character. The chapter will be very useful for a novice but also there are a few things that veteran role players will think is a good idea in here. It is very thorough.

The second chapter details role playing in game. It starts with some simple things that really need to be stated. The first is the importance to know the rules. The second is a good list of gaming etiquette. It?s good to see a product that has some focus on how to game and how to get the most out of a session by listing some things that involve common courtesy. The chapter goes on to suggest portraits, altering ones? voice, thinking about motivation, and other options to enhance role playing. It also tackles the touchy issues of using diplomacy rolls and role playing in a simple way.

The third chapters deals with non human races and how to role play them. It includes all the races of the player?s handbook and some subraces. The book doesn?t define the sub races in game mechanics but does give advice for role playing them. The section gives good descriptions and has a nice tidpits of advice on how to role play the races. The chapter also covers some savage races like centaurs, minotaurs and kobolds. These races I feel the advice given will be more useful as people have a less defiant idea how to role play them. Finally, the chapter deals with templates as well. How does one portray a half celestial or half fiend? This section offers good advice on how to do just that.

The fourth chapter details new equipment and spells. It might seem rather odd that a book about role playing has a chapter like this, but the things described here are to further detail the character. Here one will find more mundane items to detail the equipment a character would have as well as magical items of a more practical nature. For instance there are ten different types of mundane hats. Each is briefly described insuring that if a character needs a hat, the right one can be found. Some of the magical items are a belt of dryness that keeps the wearer perfectly dry and the wig of style which can alter its color and design. Perhaps they are not the most powerful of items but the utility of them is what is important. The spells are the same way like Aura of Cleanliness and Buoyancy both which are simple and useful.

The last section is for the DM and how to role play as one. It covers the topics of using props and knowing your players. It has advice for role playing cohorts as well as commoners. It covers role playing the big bad guys as well. It has plenty of suggestions for creating and keeping atmosphere. The tips here I found to be useful and correct from my own experiences.

Dice and Dramatics is a rare product that takes an area of role playing that is inadequately covered and does a great job of covering it. I was constantly surprised by the level of detail and the thought put into this book. The author has a good idea of his audience. This book is written with fantasy D&D in mind, but the advice can be applied to any role playing game. Obviously, the section on role playing elves will be of little use in a Star Wars game, but the more abstract ideas can be applied to any character of any genre. This will be of more use to the novice then the experienced gamer. The chapter on races will be more useful if the campaign keeps the races as they are presented in the Player?s Handbook. However, even the veteran gamer who has changed most of the races will find good advice that is easily used on how to role play better and enjoy the game.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Master Plan - Starships One
by Michael S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/05/2007 00:00:00

A good solid set of deck plans with great designs. The plans show a cross-section of each ship as well as the assembled tiles. Each room is a separate tile, which allows you to make your own designs with relative ease. The rooms have a fair amount of detail, and I like how each captain's quarters has a rug on the floor, indicating some level of personalization for the master of the vessel. Overall, an excellent set that is well executed and very useful.

<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: The carrier is oriented so that "up" is the direction of travel for the ship. This is so rarely done in sci-fi deck plans.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: Having each room as a separate tile means you'll HAVE to use sticky notes or tape to keep the cardstock in place. No big deal, but it MUST be done to make it useful in play.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br><BR>[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]<BR>

Independence Day Massacre
by JD S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/21/2006 00:00:00

The map pack is not all that special; while all areas have a tactical map, most are things like parking lots and picnic areas which do not require a great deal of mapping.

Still, it only cost $5, so that's hardly a crutial feature.

In all, a decent scenario for the genre.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Acceptable<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

The resolution of these images is only 96 dpi, and so parts of the design may seem "blocky" at full size. However for the price these covers are a nice buy.

Creator Reply:
This purchaser did contact us about the resolution, although he declined to pay a slightly higher price for 300dpi resolution. These covers are intended as a low cost alternative for small start up companies, or for larger companies producing a budget line and wanting an alternative to $200+ cover art for a single cover (lets face it we give you 7 alternatives for only $3, a possible saving of around $1400), we think we did a good job on these for a very low relative price, and are glad that this customer was satisifed with the result. The resolution and size of the graphics is clearly stated in the advertising material for the product. For publishers or other buyers interested in this product or similar we can alter the Design, DPI and the bleeds to your specification for a low one off payment, to cover in house costs

SFX Skills: Enochian Theurgy
by Malcolm M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/14/2006 00:00:00

A well-produced, inexpensive way to bring white, or angelic-sourced magic, into your d20 Modern campaign.

It departs from the standard d20 Modern rules, in that all the Enochian FX detailed in this product function as skills in gameplay, not spells in the traditional d20 sense. Prerequisite feats help GMs keep the ability to use Enochian magic as rare as the campaign requires, while the concept of power strain and power exhaustion prevents players from using their abilities at will, all the time, every time.

It's not a comprehensive product, but at such a low price, it would be greedy to expect it to be. Ambitious GMs will see the general pattern of FX skills checks and balances the book sets up, and will be able to "fill in the blanks" for any abilities they feel ought to be there.<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: --- Enochian magic -- angel-provided magic, as per the apocryphal Book of Enoch from the Biblical era -- seems an obvious d20 Modern counter to all the villainous diabolic sorcery floating about in d20 Modern games, and yet not even the Modern core rules have explored this idea very successfully. This product by F.J. Eastman is a good start in the right direction.

--- The book sports a nice, clean design and comes in both a standard and a printer-friendly version. The artwork won't necessarily set your world on fire, but the overall look of the product is pleasing.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: Not criticisms, merely notes for potential purchasers:

--- Be advised that one of the main virtues of this product is that it is cheap. As such, don't expect the world of it.

It touches on the general concept of Enochian magic, explains how to use FX as skills in your d20 Modern games, and provides a handful of FX skill "powers" for game use. That's it.

Don't expect some exhaustive catalogue of FX skill powers for every situation, and every conceivable character concept, at every level of gameplay, or you'll be bitterly disappointed.

This is an inexpensive product which introduces some basic concepts, provides nine example FX skill powers you can use in-game at varying levels (skills are not bound by character level, after all), and then the product basically points the way from there.

If you want more powers and more detail, you'll have to do the work yourself. You get what you pay for here.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>
