Art by Shinkei - Magi
by Jonathan G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/05/2006 00:00:00

Easily the nicest of the three art packages I've downloaded by Shinkei, these pictures are at a reasonable resolution that would make it possible to print the majority of them at about half a page in size, or larger with a little crafty use of graphical packages. The main criticism I have is that several of the magical effects depicted in the pictures are extremely gaudy and, coupled with the fact that these are 3D rendered pictures, makes them look like screenshots from a PC game. Of the 12 pictures included, I would be happy to use eight of them, and the remainder aren't exactly terrible just a little fake looking.

Definately worth the money if you're strapped for cash and need art for a fantasy product.

LIKED: Many nice, evocative pictures

DISLIKED: Some overly gaudy spell effects ruin otherwise acceptable pictures.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Very Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Art by Shinkei - Fantasy Pack 1
by Jonathan G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/05/2006 00:00:00

Good pictures in general, but some models are used several times and a couple of the pictures are at low resolutions, making them only suitable for quarter-page illustrations at most. The pictures are all 3D rendered, but competently so and do not look too false.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Art by Shinkei - Scifi Pack 1
by Jonathan G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/05/2006 00:00:00

Several good action shots in this pack, but then again there are several rather bland ones (five in total) that appear to be just the same character standing there in slightly different costumes and slightly different poses with little or no background. There are also very few men in these pictures, in fact the only one I can see is a rather nondescript security guard type person being stabbed through the chest from behind by a female assassin. Also, one of the pictures suffers from floating shadow syndrome (the character's shadow is projected onto the rear wall, but the surface she is standing on has no shadow making her own shadow appear to hover in mid air as if she were jumping). A couple of the pictures are also at far too low a resolution to use as anything but quarter page illustrations. All in all I'd say that I'd be happy to use about half of the pictures in this package, but it's still not bad at the price.

LIKED: Some good action scenes

DISLIKED: Several very bland pictures, one model gets used far too much, and there is a severe lack of male characters.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Tilez - Fantasy
by Joseph R. M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/16/2006 00:00:00

Well here is my opinion of the Fantasy Tilez from UKG Publishing: I bought this set together with the Sci-fi with the hopes of improving my existing 3-D cardstock building sets (from Ebbles Miniatures, Stones-Edges Games and World Works Games to name a few) while I really like the options available with these sets what I was missing was floor tiles with a good Hollywood Styled Near Future or Modern feel, I wanted rooms which would have differing character and this set of tiles definitely gave me many more options.

From the Beginning I appreciated the simplicity of the installation of the Tilez, Unpack/zip the data and there is the Auto run Icon... one double-click and you are in business, with the easy choice of many different Coloured or Grayscale tiles and the page of fantasy props (which probably will not see as much service as their Sci-Fi counterparts)with the fitting floor patterns were right there ready to be printed out and used. This set also keeps it simple and fun to create a more exciting setup with differing atmospheres.

LIKED: As with the Sci-Fi Tilez "What's not to like!?" see my above Rambelings :)

DISLIKED: As I commented about the Sci-Fi tilez, I had no dislikes in this set, to be honest, How can you be disappointed with this much possibilities for $2.50 !?!?

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Villages - Clayton Moor
by Chris G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/30/2006 00:00:00

It can be tough to depict a good village in a game. There are a lot of NPCs, shops, and other places they PCs might go to and preparing for everything is very hard. In the past there have been some great products that deal with the NPCs. There have been few that deal with the town though. This product gives the town, the building and some NPCs in a nice complete package.

Villages: Clayton Moor is a couple of things in one. It is a PDF and a program. The products comes in a zip file a bit over ten megs and all unzipped everything is about twelve megs. The map can be printed out and there is a nice black and white version for the players as a handout. But the bulk of this product is the interactive map that goes on the DM?s computer.

The village has a nice overview and map. Then there are over a dozen buildings that can be clicked on. The building is enlarged and a description is given. NPCs are stated up and described. The NPCs are hyperlinked and listed also together in alphabetic order. There are also printable maps of some of the places. These maps are given both in color and black and white. Also each is given as lit and unlit. Anyone familiar with UKG Publishing?s other products will recognize the style and high quality of these maps.

The product has a lot going for it but the village really should have been fully detailed. The place is not that big with only a few dozen more places on the map that would need to be described, mapped out, and detailed. The printable maps though look really good and will work well with counters and miniatures. The style is the same as their other products so those will allow people who want more to add on and expand.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Year of the Zombie: Marauders
by Lauri G. Date Added: 09/19/2006 16:31:02

It is 12.30 in the afternoon the sun is out, there are birds in the air, and there is nothing that would make this different from any other fall day. Nonetheless, the atmosphere of being in the middle of nowhere does have its toll. That impression of everything right in the world feels misleading.

I am not quoting from the e-book Year of the Zombie: Marauders but from the impression it made on me. A most impressive one at that. I started reading it at night, always a dangerous thing with a thing of horror. I woke up fitfully and finally with the sun fully in ascent did I finish it. I have never said this about any RPG sorucebook - it's gripping.

Year of the Zombie: Marauders is about three classes of survival in a post-zombie infected world. Scavengers, those who sift through the ruins discovering useful things. Excursion team, protecting settlemenets and make excursions into ruins to find things that are valuable to the community they serve. Reavers, those who are good at taking what they want from other people, and lives are just one of the things they like taking. It goes over pretty much every aspect from what can be found in ruins to different sample groups and communities that can be found. It even includes rules for morale and how to fight masses of zombies or people.

Well written with a bit of dry humor at times it has a very uncompromising writing style. There are things mentioned that I would warn you is not even for some mature audiences. It does mention rape, sexual, and physical abuse. But only as words and not as actions in flavour texts. Nonetheless, this is not a politically correct or sanitized work, so do be aware that it is direct in tone and attitude, and some may take offense to it.

There is certainly quite a few elements from post-apocalyptic visions included in the material. Sometimes though I felt I was really reading something from Twilight 2000 with the amount of military equipment and weaponry that abounds in the sourcebook.

Marauders is a most excellent source for anyone thinking of not only running a zombie campaign, but also a Mad Max world or a Firefly one. The book itself is generic enough that you donät have to seed the idea of zombies into a world, but that of different kinds of social groups that are all about their own survival + often at the detriment of others.

All in all, I would give it full marks and say that it is one of the better released PDF RPG sourcebooks this year.

Creator Reply:
Publishers note - We realise that this review gives us 5 stars but that is not the reason why we would like to give this reviewer 5 stars in return, this review is well written and gives a feel for the book without listing the contents of the book chapter by chapter, as so many reviewers seem to do nowadays, all in all this is what a review should be like. Year of the Zombie is about much more than zombies, its a D20 based source book, easily adaptable to most game systems, for a post apocalyptic world, with or without Zombies - Personal note I do think the zombies make a fiendish foe though.
