SFX Skills: Diabolism
by Michael D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/25/2006 00:00:00

A skill based system for adding sinister summoning to your games. Contains a breakdown of all the relevant skills which would be needed to have characters calling up and interacting with outsiders. They are backed up by feats that control access to this powerful new resource.

LIKED: The rules for sacrifices, which could have gone over the top, are succinct and useful without enough detail to get into trouble. Also has ideas on summoning circles and the use of true names.

DISLIKED: Without a mechanism to acquire additional skill points for use in these skills, other skills will suffer and lag behind non-diabolist characters. There is no role for existing skills like Knowledge (Arcana) or even Perform (dance or sing) for rituals or Craft (visual art) for drawing magic diagrams. In line with this, there are no provisions for skill synergy among the new skills or between new and old.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
TCCF-5 Terra Class Freighter
by Daryl D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/21/2006 00:00:00

Very good graphics, layout. Though I wonder if you intended the design to be stretchable...;)

But seriously, one of these with a fighter? Kinda like carrying a inch-long pocketknife and threatening somebody with it.

And my one ongoing problem with these wonderful maps--too hooked to d20.

LIKED: Classic 'modules on a stick' layout is the classic freighter in space setup which needed to be mapped out.

DISLIKED: WAY too hooked to d20. You could greatly expand the possible sales of this beastie if you had a little generalization away from d20 Future.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Daryl as to too hooked to D20 it kinda says d20 on the cover whilst we would love to do stuff for other systems they are kinda entrenched in all sorts of legal and copyright problems. The Freighter is a multi use craft and as such can be co-opted into any space defence fleet, hook out the frieght containers and install fighter modules and hey presto instant carrier. Transporting convicts? Use another module, kinda like thunderbird 2, the uses are endless and we only hinted on a few but feel free to alter and adapt, our products are intended to be flexible for the DM which is why we try to make the concepts less rigid than some companies, and as to the maps they are scalable ie set your printing preferences to 107% and you have an instant 30mm map suitable for other games. I have forgotten the sttings for 15 mm but play with the size and print out a sample I think it may be around 64% Kevin (owner UKG)

Please try not to take offence with this first comment, but as this product is actually aimed at D20 Future and has FUTURE in big letters on the cover, and is a Future product why did you think it was modern based? We can only try to give a guide to what area of gaming the products we produce are aimed at and had hoped that it was quite clear with this product. Thanks for the comment on cost of the vehicles, it is something we missed slightly deliberately but if users think it is something we should put in then we can do it - look out for another update. As to taking the low road, I prefer to think of it as the space opera side of Sci-Fi gaming, as a long time fan of EE "doc" Smith and others, its an area I think has been missed by many companies, and would hope that certain of our products would fill the gap. We have a range of vehicles planned for Modern/Future based on hypothetical real world developement which should suit our YotZ range of products and other 10 year on post-apocalyptic eras. Hope that answers some of you queries and would remind you that we welcome comments and input to us about products. please use ukg@ukg-publishing.co.uk as a point of contact email address for any comments, requests or submissions

Future Showroom: Jeeps
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/26/2006 00:00:00

While this product is closer to the mark then it?s Showroom stablemate on APCs, it?s still not that great. What is purported to be a product covering light tactical vehicles, ie., jeeps, what we get instead is a collection of Fast Attack Vehicles more in keeping with G.I. Joe or Megaforce then really useful vehicles.

Basicly every ?jeep? in the book has a) holds 1-2 crew; b) carries some weapon behind the cab in a remote turret like that MG jeep from the early Marvel Comics GI Joe. Now, while I wouldn?t mind seeing a few of these FAVs in a product, none of them really vary beyond that theme. It would have been nice to see something more practical to an adventuring or real military group in here. Something with a bit more capacity and something NOT looking like it came out of a game of Command & Conquer. Give us something like an R-SOV, or Wolf, or some of the new USASOC-employed HMMWVs (having a brain cramp and can?t remember their nomenclature now).

Again, I implore UKG that if you do products like this again, give a look at real world designs and developments and try and track down some folks with practical knowledge. Yeah, a dune buggy with a rocket launcher looks really sexy, two I guess are cool. 70% of you product on that theme is a bit much.

While we appreciate your feedback, we feel that your primary criticisms are a bit anachronistic, given that the product details imagined military vehicles of the far future that may not necessarily adhere to the standards of modern military vehicle classification or design. And as the product is aimed at a space opera type future then realism based on hummers is not what we were looking for. You may however wish to watch out for our forthcoming range of vehicles aimed at Modern/Post Apocalytic vehicles as these may fit your requirements more. Anyway thanks for the feedback.

Future Showroom: Armoured Personnel Carriers
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/26/2006 00:00:00

This product is?.horrible. For the publishers out there: when you make a product that is military themed and you weren?t prior military, please be willing to track down current and former troops who also game to proof your concepts.

This product presents itself as a book of Armored Personnel Carriers. Of the six designs, only two come close to being honest APC/IFVs and not simply an Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) with excess passenger capacity.

-Hussar: About the only real APC. Design-wise it?s barely mediocre but at least it?s intent is to be a infantry carrier. Fixes: throw in some anti-personnel weaponry on this thing. Anti-armor is fine, but an APC/IFV should also have an eye to supporting it?s infantry after they dismount and engage opposing troops.

-Vindicator: A wheeled design which counter-intuitively has more armor, speed, and weapons then it?s tracked counterpart, the above Hussar (yeah, less dismounts but for the trade-offs?uh uh). Again, not a great design. It has speed and armor for sure, but then delivers an undersized element so it has just enough to get it?s crew into trouble and quickly dead. Also, for it?s MASSIVE gun (for an APC) we get little other info beyond a damage number and range increment. Guys, it?s a 100mm shell. How about some stats for shells with blast effect, and some for AP use? Check out ALL the details on a real world IFV using a 100mm cannon, the Russian BMP-3, if you need inspiration.

-Reprisal: UKG even states this one is not REALLY an APC, but an artillery vehicle (kinda). Two big missiles and it carries four dismounts for local security. Again, speaking as a soldier it?s a poor concept. If you?re worried about local security, four troopies ain?t gonna help you if the Bad Guys are that far in your rear areas. That?s why you have security provided by your equivalent of Military Police, coming in their own carriers. Supposedly the vehicle can target for itself with it?s own sensors (a radar). Nevermind that most horizons will only give you about 1/3 the range on the radar (and thus the missiles), or the fact most targets needing artillery will be obscured by intervening ground clutter. This is why missile artillery today, like HIMARS and MLRS, get their targeting from another source. Incidentally the MLRS is another real world vehicle which would have helped this design since it can also fire two honking big missiles, or a six-shot pod of smaller rockets in place of each missile. And no, they also don?t carry their own dismounting security.

-Malice: A wheeled armored car supposedly for the insertion of special ops types. Great,?except for the fact each Malice carries?two guys. Any takers on where your stealth goes given the footprint created by the number of Malice?s needed to insert even a small team of like 6 troops?

-Wrath: It?s an APC?and it?s an anti-aircraft vehicle too! Oh yeah, thank you whatever contractor sold this one. Just what I want, the carrier I?m in to draw all the attention of aerospace assets. Far better to have dedicated ADA ?flak-wagon? BASED on an APC hull to follow the infantry and armor and provide blanket air defense. Not to mention the folly of risking such a valuable unit in an assault as it has to carry it?s infantry to deployment position, all while not having any self-defense weapons against ground threats. Of course it only goes 30 mph, and thus would slow down any PL7 armored column it thought it could protect.

-Retort: Another vehicle that doesn?t know what it is. A pair of missile launchers. An anti-tank vehicle like a US M901 tank destroyer? Wait, it also has a powerful engine and is said to be used for recovery ops. Is this a battlefield wrecker/recovery unit? But it also has dismounts, but only 4! Wow? so it can?t do ANY job well. As a tank destroyer it wastes space on infantry it could use for reloads, and is distracted from it?s mission by these other capabilities. As a recovery vehicle?well it can tow but that?s it. No repair gear to bring a disabled AFV back in the fight, nor anything to make it an effective recovery vehicle like cranes or winches. And as an infantry carrier/support vehicle it is also poor in that it carries too few dismounts and no weapons really good in a supporting role for it?s infantry.

The supporting gear, the 100mm cannon and the Hellfire artillery missile, are also not worth it for this product. For their size and purpose there is little thought given to them. They had potential but as written they have may as well pistol or longsword and if you just looked at their stats without seeing their ?fluff? name you could just as easily think they were a laser or railgun (ie., anything that would make the 100mm cannon of interest over say a Typhoon laser cannon would only involve differences in damage numbers and range).

While I?m glad to see products to cover these topics like military sci-fi this product falls short. Future reference, give us a product that gives us a selection of APC/IFVs (even from crappy to good to outstanding to get a full feel), or how about one giving us a base chassis followed by all the variants (see all the spin-offs of hulls like the Russian BTR, the Chinese Type 531, or the US M113). I really wish I could like this product but for something that is covering a topic, it comes across as not know what it?s talking about.

Let me say again while we appreciate your feedback, we feel that your primary criticisms are a bit anachronistic, given that the product details imagined military vehicles of the far future that may not necessarily adhere to the standards of modern military vehicle classification or design. You keep referring to the real world, this product is aimed at D20 future and space opera. As to your comments on getting ex military personel, allow me to inform you that I served for 22 years in the armed forces and this product was also looked at and enthused over by an ex-US Marine who liked the product for Future D20 use. You need to look at other products for realism. I am an ex-armourer who looked after, serviced, and maintained everything from small arms to buckets of instant sunshine, including AFVs and Light recon vehicles and I can assure you these products deal with fantasy and not realism.

Another solid product for D20 Future from UKG Publishing. If you have space fighters in your game, this would certainly be worth the cost for you to add into your campaign. Year of the Zombie

This is a brutal, realistic take on a "zombie infestation" campaign. It has all the rules needed to start a campaign, and there is plenty of material to keep the campaign going. This setting is not for the squeamish or weak-of-heart, since campaigns can tend to get gory and unforgiving. Its a hell of a lot of fun, though.

LIKED: Great presentation. This is a great supplement for Year of the Zombie. The module is long enough for a couple nights of gaming, with a bit of creativity. Its a very good intro into the setting, and can be a springboard for a long campaign. The nice thing about this setting/genre is that it can drive itself with a minimum of preparation, since it set in modern times and the players have their own ideas about what they need to do to survive.

LIKED: Good presentation, just as in the core rules. Year of the Zombie: Dead Future
by Chad H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/04/2006 00:00:00

While overall I'm a huge fan of the Year of the Zombie books, this one somehow feels a little hollow to me and I'm not entirely sure why. I love the idea of zombies on the dark and claustrophobic confines of a space station, but for some reason this particular book in the series leaves me a bit cold...perhaps the inclusion of a short scenario like gunfight in the OK Diner from the core book would have helped, I'm not entirely sure.

Overall the problem is partically one of my expectations clashing with what was intended for the product, but I can't help but feel that Dead Future could have been much better.

LIKED: The new rules are clear and easily understandable and don't add to the complexity of the system significantly. The integration of d20 future is fairly smooth.

DISLIKED: The artwork, other than the weapons illustrations, is fairly poor. Some section as simply reprints of the relevant info from the original YOTZ book (which is understandable in some cases) The product feels skimpy despite its length, and most of the sections feel like they could have used a bit more fleshing out.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Disappointed
ok points taken on board, will look to updating the product with the addition of a scenario and some extra fluff and flesh some of those sections out, we actually left some bits out in order to keep the cost down, perhaps we should have left it in and just put the cost up. Don't know what's up with the artwork, you really upset the artist without actually telling hm what was wrong in your opinion, we here at UKG actually liked the artwork - otherwise we wouldn't have used it - we wanted to make this feel a little different from a standard fantasy work with black and white pen and ink illustrations, but we understand some people don't like cgi. As to reprinting stuff from th original YOTZ book well it would have looked pretty scummy of us if we made you buy another book as well as Dead Future now wouldn't it, and would have got us a lot lower review than 3 stars at the end of the day. All the material republished in Dead Future is required by Dead Future, material specific to Year of the Zombie and not required by Dead Future was not reprinted. But we did have to make Dead Future a stand alone book it would have been unfair to other customers who haven't bought Year of the Zombie. thank you for your review and we hope that any resultant revision will have some of your ideas in.
