Sun Spots
by Tyler H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/08/2019 12:25:55

I purchased this through the original Kickstarter and have run the campaign twice, once with the Into the Darkness group that can be found on YouTube.

Sun Spots is an excellent sandbox scenario. Dave Sokolowski has created an area for the PCs to explore, allowing them to go anywhere they want and interact with anyone they wish. The scenario unfolds around the PCs as they do, revealing more and more of what is going on. The scenario has a timetable in which events happen regardless of what the PCs do - this also allows the Keeper to speed up or slow down the timeline as they see fit.

This was a pleasure to run. There are very few scenarios out there that are true sandbox scenarios AND do it well. Sun Spots is both. I would recommend this scenario to anyone who wants a well thought out sandboxed campaign.

Sun Spots

I really like the plot in this one, and its full of great roleplaying opportunities. That suits my group well. The fact that the mythos menace is a seldom used lovecraftian terror is also on the plus side. Still I have the impression that its not quite complete. I find the different avenues of solving the scenario a bit vague and poorly explained. Theres also a risk that the scenario digs down in conversations with different NPC's if the Keeper isn't experienced enough to improvise and rearrange events. I would like a few more action encounters prepared beforehand, ready to be throwned at the players. Some encounters can lead to laughs instead och frights, wich may not be every horror gamers goal. Other than that its a scenario that stands out and gives even experienced CoC players something new.

He Who Laughs Last

Great adventure with good hand-outs!

My two concerns, that barr the 5:th star rating, is (SPOILER!) 1) why there was a need to find a glass dagger, and 2) what really happened to the comedian who turned himself in only to vanish. After all, the retired detective ran over one Laughter-spreading comedian with his car, so that seemed to do the trick, so why go about a silly ritualistic dagger made of glass..? And as for the old comedian; what happens to Rafe when his protegés don't follow through... will they start to age, or what? Continuing to be a drain on his magic points, or something, because otherwise there's really nothing restricting him to turn everyone in LA into a comedian..?

A really fun scenario, especially if you desire something different.

8-10 hour run. Modern scenario in Los Angeles. More weird horror than horrifying horror.
