World of Darkness: The God-Machine Chronicle

The good: Setting: excellent Rules update: needed.

The bad: Way how rules update is presented (need for old WoD corebook)

Print: First book I ordered in "standard" print and... well, meh. I guess I'll stick to premium for any future orders. It's not bad, it's just... below standard. There is full bleed - and that's a giant plus imo. Text is readable, but a little bit more of contrast would be nice. Illustrations - some look just fine (mostly simple ones, outlines without color fill), most look bad, as there is very noticeable banding/smearing present (nothing like that in premium color books I own). Paper is thin, so if there is a full page illu on one side of a page and text on another, page curls.

I guess standard color is a good option for a second copy (one that will be abused in backpack/on gaming table or used to make notes) or for books that you want to read but otherwise don't find as "important". If you're a collector, caring how book looks, standard color ain't a good option. There is a really, really big gap in quality between standard and premium.

I'm amazed with quality (POD). First order of pod cards here, and I'm blown away. Excellent, well worth the price. As for cards "usability" - a nice, quite useful accessory.

Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition FREE Quickstart

In plus: Layout is really, really nice. Good job on character sheets also.

No opinion at the moment: background. Not enough info to say much bout world etc, which is understandable since it's just quickstart.

In minus: Unfortunately everything else. See, first and second edition had a bad, convoluted rules, but considering the time they were published, they were passable. Third edition - was at least for me - chance to turn this mess into something playable and enjoyable. And, judging by quick start, that chance was completely wasted. It's a model example of bad, unbalanced and unnecessary complicated rules. Too much impact is put on basic characteristics, skills seems completely secondary which will result in copy paste characters (not to mention that this kind of approach to character traits it's awfully unrealistic). Various modifiers, weird decision of making basic tests with 2d20 (and that can be further modified) - seriously? You dare to call that mechanic fast and fun? It's not. It's at least 10 years outdated, uncreative and confusing. Pity. Introductory adventure is mediocre and didn't sell the setting to my players. Quite understandable, cuz for reasons beyond my understanding it's almost completely stripped from stuff that makes MC universe unique, being nothing more than generic investigation in generic sci-fi surroundings. New art don't much the quality of old pieces.

Perfect!

Nice and quite inspiring sourcebook (content-wise) - 4 stars (out of 5)

First color book I ordered in your PoD program and I'm delighted - excelent print quality, way beyond my expectations (actually they were quite low as I already know how awfully b&w books offered in DtRPG PoD look like). Absolutely no banding on pictures, quite good paper and FULL BLEED! Thats how all your PoD books should look. 6 stars (out of 5)

Recommended.

World of Darkness: Mirrors

I was really excited when DTR announced PoD. As this is my first order of printed book from them, and pdf version was already reviewed by others I'll concentrate only on print quality and technical aspects of books offered in DTR PoD.

1) Cover is amazing. I ordered hardcover version and was really pleased how it looks. Vivid colors, glossy finish, solid binding. A+ 2) Interior print quality. There is small banding problem, perfectly visible on full-page artworks but its not that bad. Text is razor-sharp. Everything has a slight gloss. "Weird info" for printed books lovers - PoD book don't have that specific paint smell. Too bad. Overall, printing quality is really good. B+ due to banding problems. 3) Interior paper is below your average printed RPG source book quality. It's really white - which is nice, but of very small substance (g/m2). Its really, really thin. B

So, it looks like everything is wonderful. Unfortunately, it isn't.

THERE IS NO BLEED! NO BLEED ON INTERIOR PAGES! GOD, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE IN A XXI CENTURY?!

That's right. On every page you have that disastrous, ugly, ridiculous white border. Even on those with full page art. It's ugly. It's raping my sense of aesthetics.

How is this possible? Well, i can think of two possibilities: 1) Ligtingsource prints only on fixed paper sheets (say A5, A4 and so on), not using a cutter. Thus, pdfs are slightly scaled down to fit on page. Witch results with ugly, uneven white border around the page. If thats true, then Lightingsource is a really bad digital printer.

or

2) LS prints on paper of any size, but DTR has no "quality check" over materials issued for print. Publishers rushed to what seemed "easy additional money", without properly preparing their source files.

I was expecting that I'll receive a quality product, but I ended with two shoddy articles (no-bleed problem is present in two -of two - books I ordered). I'm seriously considering asking for a refund. I feel cheated.

I was really excited when DTR announced PoD. Hoping to get Wraith in PoD. Sadly, seems like I need to look after that on e-bay.

Please note - Mirrors are a great book. They aren't great PoD pod. My rating goes for a "technical" quality, not for this book "substance".
