This is the second installment from Tom Robinson, who also did The Haunting of Creedmore Asylum. In general, I don't usually play super hero games, but I was such a fan of Creedmore, that I figured I would give this game a try. My gaming group tried it out this Sunday.

It. Was. Epic.

Here are some things that we really loved about it:

  • Much like Creedmore, there's just a lot of extras the game comes with like over Cyphers about a bunch of pre-gen, customizable characters. It just makes these one-shots so much easier to play.
  • Before playing, I honestly wasn't sold on the whole "carnival" aspect. It didn't really speak to me, but I figured I would give it a go. I was totally wrong. It was a ton of fun. There's like 12+ attactions that you get to choose to go to, and they're all your basic carnival attraction but so much better!
  • We ended up playing all of the attractions and games, instead of just a handful (like the game suggests). A couple ended up being relatively short, and a few took a little longer. Every one was very enjoyable however, so it worked out good enough. We each have our own favorite!
  • The ticket mecahnic was totally cool as well and let us get a ton of cyphers that we got to play with, which was just fun. We usually don't burn through cyphers like that, and it was fun to just be able to use them regularly.
  • The scenario is totally repeatable as well. I could easily go back and play it again at a later date.

I will say that after the first scenario, we completely forgot about the blue/red token mechanic, so we were scrambling at the end to try to figure that out. I think you couldn't probably not even use it if you didn't want to cause there really isn't a payoff at the end one way or another. That's just my one opinion, and we still loved the game all the same.

I don't know if I'll start playing any super hero games or not, but it was definitely really fun to do as a one off! Looking forward to see what this author does next!
