MADCAP is the role-playing game where you and your friends become wacky characters in a cartoon show that you create!

  • Simple rules that feed the fires of your fevered imagination. Choose a playbook, such as the know-it-all Smartypants, the devious Trickster, the meta-satirical Self-Aware, and the proverbial more!
  • Gimmicks to customize your character for any role, such as the beleaguered small-town sheriff, the hapless red-shirted space explorer, the incompetent wizard. Change options more frequently than you change underwear!
  • Amuse yourself as you build on your each other’s jokes, stack up the laughs, and (maybe) take a few lumps when your hare-brained schemes blow up in your face.
  • Sample adventures and campaigns to get you started! Bum around some two-bit tinsel-town while you wait for your next break! Run through dark hallways while spooks chase after you! Or blunder into another franchise and take it down a peg with your smug self-awareness.
  • Look at pictures drawn by animation professionals, all full color and all modeled after the characters that you create
  • Make up your own stories as you come up with all new stuff, or copy from your favorite shows. We won't tell if you don't!

Don’t just let everyone else laugh at you – make a game out of it! And when you play MADCAP, you’re all winners!

For the last few days, I have soloed my way through an adventure I created using Calvin Core (2 pages, at DriveThruRPG). I only used the first page of this RPG. When you start it, there is only one rule. Rules get added during play when they are “triggered”. When I, as the player, got to create rules, I picked rules to develop my character. When the Game Master created rules, he would develop the Boss and his Sidekick. The solo engine I used was a yes/maybe/no oracle. To make things easier, rules were plucked from MADCAP: Screwball Cartoon Role-Play.

So, the adventure started with Calvin the Inventor. He had heard that an evil scientist had taken over an abandoned school. When Calvin saw the school up ahead, he encountered Jill the Investigator. He attempted to flirt with her, but that attempt failed. When they stepped onto the school property, they encountered a robot guard. Calvin was able to turn it off, but he failed at the attempt to reprogram it. A voice came from the robot, “Doomsday...See more

Update/errata?
One of the reviews (from 2020) mentions multiple editing errors in the rules...have these been fixed?

I feel like this game is underated. It deserves some more popularity. More people should record sessions of this game. I am interested on how other people play this game.

Well, Pierre S - the game IS called "Madcap" after all.

All seriousness aside, Sanguine Sirs, you might sell a few more copies if you tell us how it differs from SJG's "Toon."

MADCAP uses the Powered-by-the-Apocalypse system, an engine that encourages players to improvise, while the Director reacts to their moves. The game is easy to get into: choose your style of play with a playbook, add extra gimmicks to taste, and off you go. It's a modern game, featuring full color artwork by some of the best artists working today. And it's for sale, here on DTR!

Don't just take our word for it! You can listen in on actual play:

Wow! That symbol means it will play in a Betamax VCR. I haven't seen that in almost 40 years! :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
