Oh my... Where do I even start?

First off, if you're a hack-and-slash, murder hobo or edgelord type of player, this is not for you. But if you have a taste for gritty political intrigue scenarios with a sprinkle of oldschool open-world sandboxing, please continue reading.

I stumbled upon this game thanks to a Youtube video where the creator presents the game in detail. As someone who loves realistic low fantasy gaming, this is such a beautiful hidden gem. It has simple yet elegant (and deadly) mechanics which I love. The lore of the setting is rich and palpable, making me think of post-Carolingian Europe. It is vy feudal, and depicts a very grim reality that has been heavily diluted in contemporary fantasy games. Well, if you came here for that gritty flavor, welcome to Flavor Town!

The mechanics are simple: roll 1d10 and apply bonuses, and you must hit a set target-number. That's it. Combat and the damage system can be unforgiving, favoring ruthlessness and quick thinking rather than mindless brute force. But more than that, it favors staying the heck out of fights in the first place! Abbrasive and trigger-happy players will have a very hard time staying alive in this game. There are also mechanics for social "combat", which can result in loss of face, banishment or worse. One thing I would perhaps change is the Appearance attribute for Composure (mental resolve and the ability to mask your own intentions), but that's just me.

Another thing that sets Ambrosia apart from other gritty RPG's is the fact that it actually mentions many feudal customs and laws that are often ignored in modern games - either for the sake of fairness, or because it simply doesn't fit our 21st-century mindset. Things like the fact that commoners aren't allowed to carry swords (and must therefore wield spears or bows) and therefore organize archer guilds not onlyenrich the setting, but also gives an idea of how terrifying a medieval setting can (and should) be.

I find the book a magnificent piece of work. If you love WFRP, you will definitely fall in love with Ambrosia too.
