Scion Companion Part One: Tuatha (Scion)
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/03/2009 08:15:16

This is a nicely polished piece of work and does what it says on the tin. It provides you with the new pantheon, updates to powers and purviews, legacies and all the rest of it you could want in reference to the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Celtic pantheon.

The main rules addition is the notion of the ‘Geas’, a ban or pledge made by a scion of the pantheon which lends them power and a boost in ‘fate’ so long as they keep to the rules. Stray outside them and fate has a piss-fit, weakening you, keep to them and you remain strong. This is a great addition and very much in keeping with the Celtic myth.

Four Shadows: Music for Trail of Cthulhu
Publisher: Pelgrane Press
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/03/2009 08:10:16

Trail of Cthulhu: Four Shadows is a collection of four songs designed to be played during your Trail of Cthulhu game. The titles of the songs are: Anagnorisis, Ruminations, Pulp Trail of Cthulhu Theme and Purist Trail of Cthulhu theme.

The variations in the theme songs are for the two, different styles of play. I thought that these compositions fit the bill of what background music for gaming should be. Each of the songs has a broad focus with enough variety of sound and pitch to keep the music interesting. Ethereal choirs, a full symphony and some unusual sound effects flesh out the compositions, which average about three minutes in length.

Four Shadows is an excellent collection and well worth picking up.

City of Secrets
Publisher: Bailey Records

While I'm not a huge fan of the system present in the Ramlar RPG, the setting is very cool and well worth exploring. Having some background music to set the mood for this setting (regardless of what system you are using) is a great bonus.

Bailey Records puts a lot of passion and creativity into all of their music and this one is no different. Well worth picking up and playing during your game session. City of Secrets is a very worthwhile purchase.

This is a great addition to one of the best books available for the Vampire: the Requiem RPG. Not only are the maps easy to print, there is some great bonus content that did not make it into the book.

Weapons of the Gods
Publisher: Eos Press
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/21/2008 10:07:58

The book is a massive one, totalling out to nearly four hundred pages interspersed with illustrations that are mostly small, so that’s an intimidating amount of text, though most of it is background and plots, and thus optional. It includes the general rules, combat rules, character creation, kung fu, secret techniques and powers and an enormous section of plot and background providing a great many hooks and ideas to players and Games Masters alike.

Chicago Workings (World of Darkness)
Publisher: White Wolf
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/04/2008 18:14:28

A FlamesRising.com Review:

Chicago Workings is both a ghost story and an occult investigation. This is not a “difficult” adventure, but it could be challenging at times and should spark plenty of interaction between the player characters. Players looking for big action scenes won’t find too many of them in this adventure. Storytellers can certainly add in a few more Physical challenges should they find the need to spice things up a bit.

The dark moody artwork by Sam Araya and the design/layout by matt milberger combine add plenty of atmosphere to the story. The maps of the city and those of Burgess’ house are a nice addition, but too small to be of much practical use.

This could make a fun starting adventure for a group of characters. They would start to discover that the world around them can be a haunted, angry place with ghosts, magic and more. Even though they may resolve this particular mystery, others remain. Who wrote the original “Chicago Workings” document that started the feud? Are there other copies still out there? What about other cities? Has Sacred Geometry been used to alter them as well?

Criminal Intent (Vampire: The Requiem)
Publisher: White Wolf
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/29/2008 06:42:15

After giving the eBook a quick read-through I would say that this could be an great way to start a new Vampire chronicle, there are plenty of plot-hooks and lots of potential for continuing the story. Groups with games already in progress will find plenty of useful bits as well.

Criminal Intent offers up some new interactive features and really shows the potential of the SAS product line. In the story presented in CI, the characters have the chance to dive into the politics and intrigue of their city, making allies and enemies throughout the night.

The Fear-Maker's Promise (Changeling: The Lost)
Publisher: White Wolf
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/29/2008 06:38:50

Fear-Maker’s Promise was the SAS that really sold me on the product line from White Wolf.

The Fear-Maker’s Promise is full of neat twists and plot ideas that even if you don’t want to run the adventure as-is you’ll get a lot of use out of it. There are Storyteller Characters with plenty of potential as antagonists for a group of characters. The scene cards are easy-to-read and can be modified to fit your style of play with ease.

Old Man of Damascus: A Script for Cthulhu Live 3rd Edition
Publisher: Skirmisher Publishing
by Matt M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/29/2008 06:36:36

The Old Man of Damascus is a stand alone scenario for Cthulhu Live 3rd Edition and actually jumps back in history. Most Cthulhu Live scenarios are set during the “Mythos” of Lovecraft and other authors. A few of them, such as Delta Green bring the time-frame up to today and give us that X-Files vibe. This one feels more like Cthulhu Dark Ages than Call of Cthulhu, which is ok by me.

I like historical games and The Old Man of Damascus does not let me down. Like all CL3 products there are plenty of suggestions for costumes and props. This one even has a ton of pre-gen characters you can use as-is or modify to fit your needs. If you like LARPing, give this one a shot.
