Monster Brief: Goblins
Publisher: Misfit Studios
by Dillard R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/20/2011 16:23:42

This is a good product but not great.

First, I don't like the idea that if I later want to buy the setting that I'll have to pay for this again. So far the setting sounds fun, so I probably will buy it.

Next, it is a bit confusing. The Beast Wrangler should have Beast Master, not Beast Bond. Plus, he is using a critter from an obscure SW tool kit which is not stated for the brief.

I liked it more than the Dark Elf Monster Brief, not because it was better or Dark Elf was bad, but because Goblin culture is dealt with a bit more in other SW products and I am not having to start at square one with Goblins like I do with Dark Elves.

It's too expensive for what you get (75 cents to a dollar would be good). This is my take on the brief because I know I'll probably be "buying" this material all over again later.

Good.

However, some of my old beefs and some new ones.

First, when Spiros Blaak comes out I am going to have to pay for this material all over again. Misfit is very upfront about this. They don't try to trick you. So that is definitely a plus to their side. I think the price is a bit high (yes I know it is just a buck fifty!) still if I have to pay for this twice when the setting comes out it's too steep. Also if I don't buy the setting it is too steep because...

Savage Worlds doesn't have a great deal on Drow/Dark Elves in any of their products. Actually I have the Fantasy tool kits and the companion and there isn't anything about Drow/Dark elves. So this product is a step in the right direction, but it assumes you understand Dark Elf culture, environment etc. That doesn't exist presently and will only exist if someone spends the time to produce it.

So I have to say overall its good for what it is (read the other review for details) however, it leaves a lot of work for the Game Master.

Great Price!

Great Material and gobs of it. You can read the other review to get the idea.

Very evocative. I have always loved playing Crusader/Paladins so this is a great product for Savage Worlds. Really puts some meat on the bones...but.

The only reason that I give this product a 3 star rating is that I keep being told that if I buy the Spiros Blaak setting later on that I'll be paying for it all over again.

If you don't plan on buying the SW version later on this will probably be a great value, or if you can't wait again a great value otherwise its ok.

I don't want to have to pay for something twice, no matter how good the material.

Caladon Falls (Savage Worlds)
Publisher: Savage Mojo
by Dillard R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/15/2011 22:08:14

Bottom line this is a five star product.

I do not rate that high very often.

The art is superb. The setting material is enough to get you into the game immediately and Savage Mojo has tons of freebies on line. Caladon Falls supports the original campaign (Relic) in the Savage Suzerain rules. If you follow the campaign and the savage tales at the end of the book your characters will end up at Heroic for sure. This also means that you can use these characters at a later time to close out that original campaign in Savage Suzerain.

I wish they had paper minis for the beastiary, but that is a minor issue.

The critters are imaginative. The villains are well thought out and original.

Its a military campaign with your characters as irregular forces. Maybe not the first time this has been done, but one of the best that I have seen.

I love military fiction and this is good military fantasy...and quite compelling.

Well worth the price.

MARS: Savage Worlds Edition
Publisher: Adamant Entertainment
by Dillard R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/15/2011 18:26:43

Price is what puts this in four star range. Two dollars is a steal for the buyer. When it was 15 dollars it was a rip off.

The setting book is adequate. It has everything necessary to play a campaign on Burroughs Mars and that is about it. Adequate is the watchword here. It defines pretty much the entire book. Burroughs fans can "get" this book, but it seems unlikely to me that anyone else would. I don't understand the addition of the Clone Wars Synthmen and the War of the Worlds cephalopods however.

Adequate does not rate a 15 dollar price tag.

But it is great for two dollars.

The art and stories are evocative and imaginative. The art was clean but lacked "slick" except in a couple of places. Some of the art was a bit juvenile, but this was a minor amount. Two pictures got in there that clearly needed to be edited before being put in the hands of young readers.

Overall a good deal at two dollars.

Warriors of Mars

I bought this product at the full five dollar price. I too snapped it up...and immediately suffered from buyer's remorse.

I still don't know if it is worth two dollars.

Showdown is a table top miniature wargame, and a good one.

I was disappointed that Warriors did not have an army list (just something typical not definitive).

I was disappointed that it did not have a generator for scenarios or any campaign suggestions.

The scenarios are pretty generic. It would have been nice if they would have been tied to some sort of campaign or something from Mars RPG setting.

It does have an exhausting (if not exhaustive) list of different types of soldiers...but no info on how they are deployed or used.

There are tables that are useful. There are new weapons and edges that are actually new and not rehashes of old stuff.

Savage Worlds Adventure Deck

What a great product.

It adds a whole new dimension to your game. Players love these almost as much as they love bennies.

The quick quote on each card is also helpful because it gives some elements of story for the PCs to work with.

My only (minor) complaint is the price. I would price it around 5 dollars for the value.

PEG and Triple Ace Games have other cards to support this deck if you are wanting to add some setting specific cards.

There are also some fan sites that support this product. So my price quibble is pretty minor.

Ingenium First Edition
Publisher: Silver Gryphon Games
by Dillard R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/13/2011 18:13:52

I like the idea behind this game.

The three word system makes it easy to create a character and know how you are going to play that character from the start.

The game is definitely not crunchy. The combat and other skill mechanics are very simple. d10 plus modifiers versus a GM generated difficulty. This is neither good nor bad. If you like to play fast paced character driven games this is a good engine to try out. If you like crunchy try Savage Worlds for a bit more crunch or one of the plethora of d20 games if you want to spend all day on one fight.

Ingenium has a good beastiary for a basic core set of rules.

It does not have any scenarios or setting with the rules or out in any other form.

If you want adventures or a setting you'll have to wait.

For 5 bucks that may be worth it to you. For 10 you can pick up Savage Worlds that has a ton of Freebies on their website and tons of fan support. Presently I'd recommend Savage Worlds.

Interface Zero 1.0

This is one of the most thorough of settings for SW out there. IZ is definitely in good company there.

There are issues with typos. There are issues with placement of material in the book; it isn't always easy to find what you are looking for.

Having said all that. I can say I wholeheartedly endorse this product. I have called it the sin qua non of Cyberpunk SW products and it is, but it could use a bit of work. I endorse it because the authors are willing to do the work needed to fix it. They have done a beta, a first issue and a patch. This all in a very short period of time. They respond to queries and are open to suggestion.

As a writer I know how hard it is to take criticism and respond graciously. These guys are definitely pros.

Now on to the good stuff. The design system for cyberware is FFF (fast, fun, furious) captures the feel of cyberpunk. It is very open to GM/PC modification with enough examples to make the job easy. The same can be said of the program creation system.

There are random generators in there for harried and time crunched GMs. Random generators for Domains (in Virtual Reality) for Bounties (for your Bounty Hunters) and even a Random Generator for Adventures.

With the present price of 15.99 this is a great choice for a SW setting.

CthulhuTech Quick-Start Rules

Date Added: 06/13/2010 20:22:04

It's free so it is definitely worth the price. As a quick start this is one of the best out there. The rules are comprehensive enough to run the obligatory scenario. The art is exceptional. The rules are simple and elegant. I like the simplicity of the d10 system and the broad range of possibilities that it takes account of without being overbearing.

The setting is intriguing. There is alot in this set of rules enough to whet the appetite while leaving you wanting more.

I didn't really know anything about the system before I downloaded this. It was hard to figure out that it was a d10 system because the refrence was hidden in a rather obscure passage before the disscussion of the rules began in earnest. This cost me some time.

Overall this intrigued me enough that I will probably buy the core rule book.

Thanks for a great product. I'd recommend this for 11.99, shoot I'd recommend it for 15.99.

This setting appears to be defunct. That's a shame because all the material is fantastic. Read the other reviews.

However, much of the material here relies on a storyline that will likely never be told. The website has been down for close to a year and the blog Rocketship Empire HQ hasn't had a new entry since Mar 09.

I would like to believe that this system will take off again someday, but won't hold my breath.

If you don't mind spending a bunch of time creating the timeline and further setting material then buy this, if you don't have the time then don't spend your money one this.

This is a heartbreaker for me. I really loved the idea of this game setting, but it no longer is supported by the author. The homepage has been closed for about a year now. The blog site is still open Rocketship Empires HQ, but hasn't had a new post since Mar 09.

What material there is is superb. However, much of the present material relies on other products that should have been made, but weren't, and probably never will be.

This system is presently without support. I can't recommend it for that reason alone.

I would give it five stars other wise.

However, there is a lot missing from the overall system and what has been produced its' value hinged on later products that probably will never be finished.

There has been no operating support site for this game system for close to a year now.
