Dark and Gritty. If you like noir, this is a perfect setting for Savage Worlds. Well written and detailed, this product gives details on the fictional city of Wellstone. Detailed just enough, but still open enough to allow for future expansion and GM personalization.

Even if you don't play in Wellstone, this booklet gives great new details on specialized ammo and a few new edges that work well in a modern setting. Also, a decently populated list of NPCs help round this product out.

All in all either great if you play in Wellstone, a modern, or future cyperpunk game, this product is worth the price.

WHAT WORKS: A great feel to the book, especially in the flavor text, which I really only tend to mention if I enjoy it quite a bit. The new Edges amp up the adrenaline a bit, combind with removing the rank requirements. To say nothing of a whole slew of stock NPCs for the GM to use.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: As settings go, this is real barebones, meaning that a novice GM might struggle wirh it a bit (or I may be the only guy who still reads "How to GM" sections). A couple of things make me question the game's focus...evoking Sin City, for instance, and then adding penalties for using bigger and badder guns.

CONCLUSION: Some nice rules options back up the modern noir feel, althoughI don't feel as though it's really aiming for "gritty" as some claim...and not that that's a bad thing. I think Savage Worlds is great for a Marv-like rampage, for instance. The ammo rules really cater to the folks that say Savage Worlds isn't crunchy enough, and the adventure does a nice job of getting the characters started in Wellstone City. A really good setting for an experienced Savage Worlds GM who is up on his noir, but someone new to noir or GM Savage Worlds might come up a bit cold. Also, last I checked, there was supposed to be an Interface Zero version of Wellstone City coming, and if that's still true, I can't see that not being great.

Its a great setting, perfect for a wide variety of campaigns and a whole lot of information to let you tell a good story. The added endges and hinderances along with other setting specific rules really give Wellstone a grittier feel and very enjoyable. The organizations and history of Wellstone though are really what I enjoyed the most. Im glad they went to the trouble of creating such interesting forces to contend or help with the party, and with such a long timeline you can easily slip into a different era. My only complaint is the disturbing amount of spelling mistakes and grammar errors. It does nothing to take away from how amazing the setting is but I can only hope that my next purchase from SGG has been cleaned up better. All in all I definitly recommend Wellstone City for your next Savage Worlds adventure.

We appreciate Andrew's very kind words and we most sincerely hope that he get the opportunity to fully enjoy the book. However, we are unclear of where his spelling and grammar errors play a part; perhaps they are in one of the many pieces of one-page flavor fiction included in the book, or perhaps they are due to a spelling difference between American and British English. The flavor fiction, one piece of which is found in the preview of the book, has some colloquial errors in it that are used as creative writing devices. They differ from the rest of the book in that manner; the fiction is fiction and it serves as only a snap shot of Wellstone, and does not convey the style of writing used in the rules, history, and technical aspects of the rest of the book. We would like to take the opportunity to forward the fact that the book has been thoroughly edited by both Kevin Rohan and David Baymiller, as well as dozens of other pairs of eyes over the last six years that Wellstone has been available in some context or another.
