I gave this 5 stars for multiple reasons. Yes, there are some historical inaccuracies, as pointed out by a prior review. Yes, the rails should only be about 4 feet 8.5 inches apart but I wasn't too concerned about that either. I was more interested in size than accuracy and these are showing rail cars that are a little over 10 feet wide by 50 feet long, common enough for the time and close enough for my gaming purposes.

My likes with this: 1) it has rail car roof tops (and a special caboose one) for those western style speeding train roof fights ... were they really blue? 2) the sizes, designs and colors are plenty good enough for my miniature and RPG gaming. 3) 12 very nice maps (tracks, engine, open car, 1st & 2nd class pasenger cars, baggage, prisoner, coal, tanker, logger, livestock cars, and caboose) 4) Nice art work 5) loved the inclusion of a steampunk style engine 6) PDF includes square, hex, and no grid overlays along with the VTT files

My gripes were 1) I'd prefer the cars without the 5-6 inches of solid terrain ink on each page. 2) the light yellow lines get tough to see when printed. But I overlay a see-thru grid sheet so it works for me. 3) a "sleeper" car would have been nice. 4) a dining car would also have been nice. 5) not all engines, coal/wood cars, other cars were 50 feet long. I've cut and pasted some of these to be shorter for my use.

I've gotten various DramaScape map files and have not been disappointed, yet.
I bought train maps from 2 different DriveThru vendors and this one suited my needs the best.

1880's Train Car Map Set
Publisher: Gamer Printshop
by George H. [Verified Purchaser]

This is a nice set of train cars, engine, coal car and brake car (caboose). It includes really nice carpeting, chairs, water closets, woodwork and other details. If we take the stated premise that the squares represent 5 feet, then these cars are 20 feet wide and some as much as 170 feet long.

But, if you check on the sizes of actual USA train cars, modern or from the 1880s, they tend to be 8-11 feet wide and up to 86 feet long. One might ask, "why?" One answer for the width is "tunnels." The train cars were made to go through the tunnels dug through mountains and those accommodated about 11 feet wide cars. Load gauges are the other reason. According to the wiki on Loading gauges, "The old standard North American passenger railcar is 10 ft 6 in (3.20 m) wide by 14 ft 6 in (4.42 m) high and measures ... 86 ft 0 in (26.21 m) over coupler pulling faces ..."

Yes, in a fantasy 1880s setting, the trains can be as big as you want and these are just fine. If you are running something history-based, these should probably be listed as 1 square = 2.5 feet. Or, I could print these at half size to make them proper scale in the PDF. That would make the trains come in at about the right sizes for real trains of the era.

For the scale issue, I gave it 4 stars. Other than that, it is a really nice set!

I appreciate the review. Regarding the scale, yes, the scale given is too big, but the maps are designed for miniatures use, which require more room to move around than a true representative scale can accommodate. The scale was set deliberately too large for this reason.

Let me start out by saying that this was free. Now, as a DM who is runnig a mostly-historical Victorian era game, this will be handy. You see, the party is based in London, England, but have made several trips "across the pond" to the USA. This is giving me some ideas for making those week-long voyages less uneventful. This is for the Fiasco system, which I am NOT using. But the ideas presented in the tables of this little jewel spark my own ability to create something interesting that can happen on the party's normally mundane trips across the pond. For the ideas alone, I gave it a good rating.

d20 Modern Core Rulebook (d20M)

Right. This is not the original OEM pdf. But, in all honesty, it is better than any other PDF that I have been able to find out there. The only thing that could make it better is hyperlinks in the table of contents, the index and throughout. But, for me it is the best version I can find and $10 was worth it.

As far as the game itself, it is good for what it is. Yes, the system has flaws, as do most RPG systems. But it is consitent enough with D&D 3.5/d20 that it is usable for modern games by people familiar with the 3.5 system.

That's why d20 Modern is used in 1 of the games that I play in and 1 that I DM. And, for the record, I have also played and/or DMed D&D 2e, D&D 3/3.5/d20, Pathfinder (player only), Star Wars Saga Edition (player only), D&D 4e and D&D 5e. Each system has its own benefits and drawbacks. But we play what the DM is comfortable DMing and the players are comfortable with and want to play.

Free is always good! But, if you're playing a jungle, Victorian or steam campaign, it's great stuff to show players to set the mood.

Victorian Villa - Fantasy Floorplans
Publisher: Dreamworlds
by George H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/22/2013 12:58:26

This product has information on each of the rooms and their purpose in the Victorian middle class home. But, there is no information on the sizes listed for any of the rooms. The floor plans seem hand drawn but the layout of the home is there and one could scale the rooms from the size of the doorways, if you have the time to do that. If you are looking for a map of this place with a square or hex grid on it, this is NOT that. If you are looking for views of this place from the outside, this does not have that, either. It could be improved by adding information on the size of each room to their description or by putting a scale on the floor plans. But, for free, it's not a bad value.
