When I first walked into Lizzie Stark running In Residency at InterCon 2014, I was a caught a little off guard. I had never played an American Freeform LARP before, nor a Nordic style LARP. Coming from a background in theater and writing, and with a good deal of experience in Vampire: the Masquerade and boffer LARPs, it was different. She walked us through the process of building the people we would be playing, and broke the ice with a clever theater game. By the time we got to the first party, I was already in the skin of Joshua, my loving-it nihilistic YouTube documentarian who could drop dead at any moment.

What followed is genuinely one of the best LARPing experiences I have ever had. In five hours, I got to experience a range of character growth and development that I rarely got to see in years-long campaigns. And by the interactions I had with my fellow players, I could tell I was not the only one. Approaching art as an expression of emotional trauma and turmoil is pretty heavy subject matter, but In Residency gives it the room for it to breathe and the focus for it blossom. By the time I took off the character of Joshua, I had truly been able to see a world different enough from my own to feel I had gained in the experience.

The version released here is slightly different than the one I played in, but everything that has been changed was an improvement. This is definitely one of the very best LARPs out there in the American Freeform style, and hats off to Lizzie Stark for tackling a difficult, if compelling subject head on. Lizzie Stark's In Residency is a game I cannot recommend enough, and you should buy it and run it with as many brave people as you can get.
