OSR does what 5e cannot, have a soul. It's got simpler rules while still showing off what makes DnD neat, going into old abandoned places and finding more than you bargained for. Or helping people. Or being force of utter chaos. Does it have less than other editions? Maybe. But what it has is to the point and good enough and spells are organized by class and level.

oh, another BECMI clone :) Ok, it is just another BECMI clone, but, it isn't mired in clutter. It's free, so for Lord's sake stop complaining :)

The no art version is nice. Not because of printing ink, who today does their own printing? It's 140 pages if you add a few PC sheets. The low art just means it reads easy. Use the occasional blank space for some notes.

I am uncertain this is a 30 dollar hardcover purchase. It's competing with the likes of Basic Fantasy role play at 17 bucks for hardcover. But this likely would do well enough on a tablet. And remember, it's free. If you want to go all in, my advice, buy the Companion pdf, and have both printed as a single item and spiral bound.

The thing is, once you reach 300 pages of black and white printing cost, you are likely better off to buy the Rules Cyclopedia colour hardcover print on demand and play real BECMI.

After so many years, this is still the "go to" RPG book.

It will teach you how to role play and how to DM. No need for narrative crutches nor skills. Just use attributes and your imagination properly. Time tracking and maps together with some chances rolls witll give you a campaign going.

The Best B/X clone by far. Very well written and easy to use. Which it would get more support though.

Labyrinth Lord is hands-down the best classic B/X retro-clone/simulacrum system available; the only way to get a closer experience to the original Moldvay/Cook is to buy the original Basic and Expert books!

When you add in the material from the Advanced Edition Companion, the overall game plays more like the "Best of the LBBs" than Advanced D&D, which I feel is a definite feature, not a bug. The two volumes together have everything one needs to play for decades of campaigning.

Even with all the improvements in the new, 5th Edition of D&D, Labyrinth Lord is the best way to introduce young players to fantasy role-playing. As with the original, the system is clean, simple, and easy to understand, yet leaves wide vistas open for the imagination, on the part of the player as well as the Labyrinth Lord.

As a B/X fan I look upon any attempt to emulate or clone it with great criticism. This book does not disappoint. It is lovingly true to its source material while being its own thing at the same time.

The key difference between LL and B/X is that this game takes your PCs all the way. Each XP chart goes through 20th level (or to the level limit for the class). The spells go through their 7th or 9th level limits so you can play your campaign at any level you prefer.

I own print version of bot the LL and AEC so I highly recommend picking those up and buying the full PDFs. The art is wonderfully old school.

Whether you are a game writer creating material compatible with B/X or simply wish to play something like the best version of the greatest game, Labyrinth Lord is right in the sweet spot.

I got LL because it is closer to 1st/2nd ed fantasy than most competitors. Having started playing with 3rd, I was curious what I had missed. Basically I had missed simplicity and fun in the pursuit of killer feat/class combos. LL brings you back to basic. If you are a 3e person like me, the AC seems wierd, although I have played enough Call of Chthulu that percentile based skills were plenty comfortable. The way the saves are laid out eliminates annoying math, although you have to hunt for your attack bonus...just like the 1st ed books I have seen. It also has the inevitable "unplayable" characters that so many older players complained to me about. Namely, a 1st level Rogue is freakin useless! No HP, and the skill that are it's forte fail more than they succeed. But then I have almost never played any D20 based game starting at 1st level, because most 1st levels of any D20 game are somewhat sucky. LL like 3rd ed is best played from 5th to 15th levels, and then it is a lot of simple easy to learn fun. Character creation is 10 to 20 minutes so you can actually play at your first session. Step back into the old school days and enjoy.

Just what I was looking for. Its all here and for free no less. I honestly prefer this clean streamlined single book to OD&D - for pure utility. The ideal retro-clone in my opinion.

Oh, the simple days of taking your 1st level magic user into a dungeon armed only with a dagger and magic missile and praying to every god in every dimension that you will survive to second level. The simple days when a goblin was a goblin, an orc was an orc and a dragon would probably kill half your party. Then the survivors would divvy up a huge amount of xp and gold.

If you remember fondly the days of old school gaming or would like try what us old guys talk about some times as we start to nod off at the table than I highly recomend this product. They have done a great job of presenting for the public a game that I started my RPG hobby with and still love today.
