Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle (D&D Next)

Watermarked PDF

Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle is a D&D Next preview and mini-campaign comprised of four thrilling adventures, designed to advance characters from 1st level to 10th level. The book also contains everything a Dungeon Master needs to run the adventures, including D&D Next game rules developed during the massive public playtest, monster statistics, spell descriptions, magic item descriptions, and background information on the coastal town of Daggerford, where the campaign is based.

Against the backdrop of the Sundering, brave adventurers must protect the town of Daggerford against an insidious foreign threat while forging alliances, exploring dungeons, and battling monsters. The action moves from the Lizard Marsh to the orc-infested hills, finally culminating in a deadly altercation amid the crumbling ruins of the legendary Dragonspear Castle.

Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle includes pre-generated D&D Next characters, as well as rules for advancing these characters up to level 10. The book also includes the winning character sheet from our recent contest.

So no news on an update for 5e yet or they already said they are not going to? If the latter does someone have a quick reference for changes to make this adventure 5e appropriate?

I wish there was a printer friendly version.

Hello, can someone please tell me what files you get when purchasing this PDF? From my understanding, this was part of the D&D Next playtest materials, and you need more than the actual book to run it properly. Does this purchase come complete with everything needed to run the adventure?

Please update to the newer edition d&d next, because this is using the playtest rules.

Is it so different that it is unplayable?

Have the rules for this been updated for the release of 5e? I'd really like to know before I buy this if it's usable.

I don't think so, I also would like to know if they are going to update some these playtest era adventures.

I just sent them an email via the "contact us" page. Hopefully someone can give us an answer. I'll buy it if it's updated, but otherwise it's just more work you have to do before you can play.

Did you ever receive an update from WotC on this?

Is it possible to play this mini-campaing with the last 5ed. rules recently released with the Basic Rules? Can I use these as a replacement for the rules provided in Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle?

I've read that this comes with pre-gens, but are there rules for creating new characters ?

I've heard that today's update to the file included an update to the D&D Next rules. Could anyone confirm that? And if so, how do the rules differ from the final playtest packet? Thanks for your help!

The ReadMe for the rules says that they dont contain any material not already released. I haven't gone through to see if there are any small changes.

The only real change is minor. I think it was a link to the Tunnels and Trolls site for GMs who've given up on trying to keep track of too many rules.

Does this product have maps that I can print to run my adventure?
Customer avatar
Geoff G February 03, 2014 12:28 pm UTC
Sort of. It has a map of the sword coast you could print and give to your players. It also has maps of the dungeons with grid lines, but they are not at a the standard size of, say, poster maps.

I enjoyed this adventure. We are in chapter 4 now, and expect to finish over the next few weeks.

It is a bit treasure light, and very magic light, especially for players more accustomed to LFR style play.

When did you start? About how long does it take to complete the whole campaign? Are there adequate beasties for your level 9/10 characters to fight?
Customer avatar
Brian C January 07, 2014 4:35 pm UTC
Are there many additional monsters in the bestiary over the final playtest packet?
Customer avatar
Geoff G January 08, 2014 3:29 pm UTC
There are a few additional monsters, but most of them are contained in the playtest packet.

I can answer my own earlier question now. There is plenty of content in this adventure. I'm a happy DM. I can't wait to use this with my group. Don't be why about purchasing this despite the outdated rules.

Has anyone used the adventure with the latest (last) incarnation of the D&D Next rules? How does it stack up? Will I need to convert anything?
Customer avatar

Does anyone know how long the characters are supposed to wander around the swamps in Adventure 1 Part 3? I.E. How many encounters should they have before the reach the temple?

Just started to play this with my group last week and when they say 1st to 10th they're either relying on the DM to be very creative in keeping the party alive or they simply haven't play-tested it at all because theres no way the starting encounters are designed for 1st level heroes.

(outside of that 'so far' its been an interesting adventure)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
